Assigned School Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in Educational Leadership or Administration. Valid Alabama Class A or higher certification in Educational Administration. Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience. Demonstrated knowledge of instructional leadership, student discipline, and school operations. Position Summary An assistant principal serves as a key member of the school leadership team and reports directly to the Principal. The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the Principal in the administration and enforcement of Board policy and all applicable federal, state, and local laws. The position includes leadership and support in student discipline, instruction, school management, safety, security, evaluation, and other duties as assigned by the superintendent or designee. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Assistant Principal shall perform duties including, but not limited to, the following: I. Instructional Leadership Support the principal in implementing instructional programs aligned with district priorities, state standards, and legislative mandates. Conduct classroom observations and evaluate teacher performance to support professional growth and continuous improvement. Assist in monitoring classroom instruction, analyzing student achievement data, and supporting school-wide instructional goals. Support literacy and numeracy initiatives in compliance with Alabama state law. Prepare, host, and participate in professional learning communities, instructional coaching cycles, and staff development activities. II. Student Discipline and School Climate Assist in administering student discipline in accordance with Board policy, the Code of Student Conduct, and applicable laws. Promote a positive school culture focused on student accountability, restorative practices, and equity. Collaborate with counselors, teachers, and families to address student behavior and attendance concerns. III. School Management, Evaluation, and Operations Assist with daily school operations, supervision, and organizational management. Evaluate school programs, procedures, and overall effectiveness to support continuous improvement. Perform staff evaluations and provide constructive feedback in alignment with district policies and professional standards. Support personnel management functions as assigned, including staff supervision and compliance documentation. Ensure adherence to board policies, district procedures, and state regulations. IV. Safety and Security Support the implementation and monitoring of school safety plans, emergency procedures, and security protocols. Coordinate drills, respond to incidents, and support crisis management efforts as needed. V. Family, Community, and Extracurricular Engagement Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and the community. Support effective communication with parents and stakeholders regarding school expectations, student progress, and concerns. Attend and support school activities beyond the regular school day, including extracurricular events, parent meetings, and community functions. VI. Additional Duties Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent's designee. In schools with multiple assistant principals, duties will be assigned and divided as determined by the principal or superintendent's designee. This job description is intended to comply with Alabama state law effective beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, which requires assistant principals to support principals in the overall administration of public K- 12 schools. Terms of Employment 10-month,11-month, or 12-month Salary and benefits consistent with the approved Montgomery Public Schools salary schedule. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Instructional Leadership & Teacher Effectiveness Conduct classroom observations and staff evaluations for 100% of assigned teachers. Student Discipline & School Climate Ensure 95% of disciplinary referrals are addressed in accordance with Board policy and Code of Conduct within required timelines. School Management, Operations, and Evaluation Implement at least two measurable improvements in school operations or organizational processes annually. Safety, Security, and Crisis Preparedness Ensure 100% implementation of safety plans, emergency drills, and security protocols. Family, Community, and Extracurricular Engagement Attend and support at least 80% of school extracurricular events and family engagement activities.
