DESCRIPTION :
An Assistant Principal at Avondale Middle School is responsible for the leadership and supervision of students and staff. Responsibilities include leading the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the instructional program. In addition, he/she is responsible for the supervision of the personnel and students under his/her jurisdiction, the development of positive community relations between the middle school, district, community, and adherence to all policies and procedures of the Board of Education. Candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge of middle school age students, effective leadership practices, instruction, analysis of appropriate data, and be able to design and implement appropriate responses based on results.
QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a Master's degree or higher, from an accredited institution with emphasis in educational leadership, school administration and/or curriculum, or other related field. Possess or immediately qualify for a Michigan Teacher Certificate and Administrator Certificate. Three years of experience as an educator, middle school experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership that results in teamwork and collaborative working relationships. Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear vision and to work cooperatively with colleagues to attain the vision. Ability to establish working relationships that result in mutual respect. Ability to speak clearly and concisely, both in oral and written communication. Strong knowledge base in middle and/or high curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Knowledge of federal and state educational mandates. Strong interpersonal and public relations skills. Understanding of and preference for working with students at the middle school level.
PREFERENCES AND SKILLS
Experience with or knowledge of Capturing Kids' Hearts, Innovative Education Practices, Standards-Based Assessing, Community Relations, Restorative Practices, Curriculum Development, Instructional Leadership, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, PowerSchool and/or student master scheduling software, Building operations and building safety, and security.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides leadership for secondary curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including the MTSS process. Communicates the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the middle school program to the students, parents, staff members, and to the community at large. Provides leadership to meet and exceed the standards in the state accreditation program, school improvement framework, and federal adequate yearly progress. Proven track record in dealing with students and families from diverse backgrounds. Proven success in dealing with at-risk populations. Monitors adherence to the approved curriculum and appropriate instructional practices. Proficient at understanding, diagnosing, and providing instructional feedback regarding closing the achievement gap. Assumes responsibility for the administration of middle school assessments and the reporting of results. Contributes to the design and implementation of professional staff development programs to support building and district goals. Works collaboratively as a member of the middle school leadership team to meet and exceed building and district goals. Assists with the evaluation of staff assigned to the middle school. Provides guidance in resolving conflicts with students, staff, administrators, and parents through a restorative lens. Assists with creating and maintaining a safe environment for all students and staff. Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline according to the code of conduct and due process standards. Supervises and actively participates in afternoon and evening school activities as assigned. Works cooperatively with other administrators in the areas of pupil accounting, facility use, staff assignments, financial resource development, and coordination of schedules. Ensures compliance with all policies of the Board of Education and administrative guidelines and procedures by administrators, staff, and students. Attends and participates in Board of Education meetings, as well as appropriate committee meetings to support the work of the middle school, district, and community. Bending, lifting, and overhead work are required. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance at the job is an essential function. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal and Superintendent of the School District.
