Current Connecticut Educator Certification and Connecticut Intermediate Leadership Certification, 092 General Scope of Function New Milford Public Schools seeks an expert educational leader for the position of Middle School Principal. The ideal candidate must be a visible leader who champions the "teaming" model and fosters deep social-emotional connections. Guided by the district's core ideals: Focus, Heart, Collaboration, and Creativity, we require a professional who balances firm, consistent disciplinary standards with restorative practices and drives excellence through a deep understanding of effective instruction and actionable feedback. The ideal candidate will empower high-performing teachers to lead peer-mentoring initiatives while remaining committed to the holistic development of young adolescents is essential. The Principal contributes to the district's mission and foundational frameworks, including the Portrait of a Lifelong Learner and the Instructional Keystones, ensuring these guiding principles are reflected in daily practice and decision-making. The successful candidate will be a steward of the progress made at SMS, possessing the humility to honor established traditions and the vision to lead a highly dedicated staff into the school's next chapter. The Principal is responsible for ensuring a safe, secure, and supportive environment where students and staff can thrive both physically and emotionally. Preferred Qualifications Possess a Master's Degree and at least five (5) years of successful experience in a leadership position in a school system. Hold a current Connecticut Educator Certification and Intermediate Leadership certification (092). Demonstrate achievement as an educational leader, including specific evidence of improvement in student learning as a result of leadership. Lead and manage adults effectively, including coaching, evaluation, and team-building among a variety of stakeholders. Apply deep knowledge of pedagogical models and strategies to improve instructional delivery and design high-quality professional learning. Collaborate cross-functionally and cross-organizationally to accomplish integrated projects. Cultivate and sustain a positive school climate and a strong school culture. Implement systems-level change management to drive organizational improvement. Direct school-wide safety initiatives and integrate restorative practices as a core component of a safe school climate Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Principal reports to the Superintendent, and is responsible for the general operation and leadership of the school.
Major duties include:
coordinating, evaluating and improving the instructional program for all students in the school. supervising and evaluating all certified personnel in the school, and promoting the improvement of teacher performance through a systematic program of professional development. improving classroom performance by providing actionable feedback to all staff while empowering high-performing teachers to lead peer-mentoring and scale best practices. fostering strong staff connections through the "teaming" model, ensuring a unified approach to student success. maintaining a visible, empathetic presence to ensure every student feels a genuine sense of belonging during these critical transitional years. promoting SEL and restorative practices that balance firm disciplinary standards with empathy and community accountability. promoting positive relationships between the school, the parents of its students and the general community. developing the annual budget request for the school, and managing financial resources as provided through the budget of the Board of Education. overseeing the development and implementation of the school's emergency management and crisis response plans, ensuring all staff are trained and drills are conducted with precision. collaborating with district facilities and security personnel to ensure the physical plant is secure and all safety protocols are strictly followed. promoting a culture of wellness and psychological safety, recognizing that staff well-being is the prerequisite for student success. ensuring 100% compliance with all state and federal laws regarding student safety, mandated reporting, and civil rights (Title IX, etc.). Additional Duties and Responsibilities The person in this position will be responsible for any additional duties and/ or responsibilities as assigned or required by the Superintendent.
Physical Activity:
The position will require infrequent lifting, pulling, or pushing during the normal performance of the tasks and responsibilities. Work may require frequent walking and standing.
