General :
Serves as Vice-Principal responsible for supporting the School Principal and Administration team in developing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating comprehensive educational and student services programs. Under the Principal's direction, programs are administered according to policies, statutory requirements, administrative rules and regulations, and consistent with collective bargaining agreements. Emphasizes integrating Kamaile Academy's core values, Hawaiian culture-based education, and aloha ʻāina as the foundation of leadership and decision-making.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Works under the general supervision of the Principal and in alignment with schoolwide priorities and goals. Responsible for knowledge of and adhering to school and board policies and directives. Exercises substantial judgment and independence in carrying out responsibilities consistent with guidance while upholding the school's cultural values and vision.
Student Learning and Achievement:
  • Develops, communicates, and implements a shared vision for all students to achieve or exceed standards while honoring their cultural identity and fostering a deep sense of aloha ʻāina.
  • Develops, monitors, and reports on specific goals and actions designed to advance student achievement through culturally grounded approaches, including place-based and ʻāina-based learning.
  • Establishes clear priorities and maintains focus on the vision, goals, and actions to achieve the vision and secure a better future for the students, the school, and the community.
  • Communicates student and school achievement progress and provides required reports to school stakeholders, Board of Directors, Local Advisory Panel, and funders.
Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment:
  • Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of culturally responsive curriculums aligned with standards and rooted in Kamaile's instructional framework.
  • Ensures the delivery of the school-approved curriculum in every classroom, integrating Hawaiian cultural values, place-based learning, and innovative instructional strategies.
  • Leads teachers in creating and using classroom-based assessments to inform culturally relevant instruction and improve student outcomes.
  • Incorporates multiple assessment tools and strategies, aligning them with the cultural context and community values to support student achievement of performance standards.
  • Regularly refines goals and action plans to address performance gaps, prioritizing culturally grounded solutions.
Student Support Services and Student Discipline:
  • Designs, implements, and maintains comprehensive student support systems aligned with Kamaile Core Values, utilizing multiple data points and strategic/targeted plans to meet student needs.
  • Supports counseling and discipline approaches that emphasize restorative practices and community accountability.
  • Supports instructional staff in identifying interventions and classroom management strategies.
Takes necessary disciplinary action, ensuring all actions are legally compliant, culturally respectful, and serve the best interest of teaching and learning.
Leadership and Governance:
  • Consistently demonstrates high moral, ethical, and professional standards of performance, conduct, and personal integrity, which includes addressing problems and issues in an open, honest, and timely manner.
  • Serves as a champion for the school organization, emphasizing the importance of Hawaiian culture-based education in leadership and decision-making.
  • Creates a professional environment by assuring that personal and staff interactions with others in the school, community, and corporation are conducted with utmost respect and professionalism.
  • Promotes equity and an inclusive environment for staff, students, and community members.
Community Engagement and Partnerships:
  • Provides leadership in developing and leveraging community partnerships that align with aloha ʻāina and Hawaiian culture-based education to enhance the school's resources and student achievement.
  • Collaborates with local organizations, families, and community members to ensure the school's practices reflect and honor the unique identity of Waiʻanae and the values of the larger Hawaiian community.
Communication and Marketing:
  • Develops and implements communication strategies highlighting the school's commitment to Hawaiian culture-based education and fosters enthusiasm for its vision and mission.
  • Keeps parents and community members informed about the school's challenges, accomplishments, and opportunities.
  • Models and promotes trust, enthusiasm, rapport, respect, and openness among faculty, staff, students, and community members.
  • Celebrates successes and recognizes achievements, ensuring inclusivity of cultural and community contributions.
Human Resource Management:
  • Participates in interviewing, hiring, and assigning new staff members.
  • Provides professional development opportunities that enhance staff understanding of culture-based education.
  • Fosters self-reflection among staff, monitors individual performance, and provides feedback and coaching to support continuous growth.
  • Ensures staff align their actions with the school's vision.
Operations and Financial Management:
  • Assists the Principal in carrying out operations and financial management responsibilities
  • including budget planning, resource allocation, and ensuring efficient use of school resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of Hawaii School Administrator Certificate and/or out-of-state administrative credential, and/or possession of a Master's Degree in Education (Degree in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership preferred);
  • At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of school leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrative skills in using data and technology for teaching and learning.
  • Managerial skills in planning, organizing, delegating, listening, and following through.
  • Knowledge of innovations in education, alternative instructional strategies, place-based learning, alternative assessment methods, blended instructional support, support for students needing specialized services, instruction based on student performance and decision-making, and cooperative learning.
  • Belief in and commitment to a values-based education that empowers all students to reach their full potential.
Demonstrates an ability to:
○ Create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive school climate for students and staff. ○ Foster growth, creativity, and flexibility using various techniques. ○ Facilitate the resolution of complex interpersonal issues and professional conflict. ○ Communicate effectively with all constituencies, including speaking to large groups. ○ Demonstrate successful experience in shared decision-making and program development. ○ Achieve educational reform, inspire, and lead change. ○ React responsibly and intervene in emergencies. ○ Gain and build upon public/community trust and involvement. ○ Commit to personal growth and development, taking advantage of continuing education opportunities.
