Position Information
The Peer Mentoring Program is designed to assist students working with Student Accessibility Services in developing skills that can assist with a positive transition to life in college. The positive connection between mentor and mentee can enhance a student's college experience by assisting in social skill development and creating opportunities to promote social growth & connections on campus. The Peer Mentoring Program also provides mentors with the opportunity to establish strong leadership skills that can promote personal growth in their academics and careers. In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to:
Host weekly/bi-weekly mentoring sessions with their assigned mentee(s), customizing approach to meet the needs and goals of the mentee(s).
Provide mentorship to new mentors by offering guidance, modeling best practices, and supporting their development in the role.
Provide passive programming and other support as needed to students in the office.
Collaborate with fellow mentors to coordinate "mentee meet-ups" to promote social skill development.
Co-facilitate events hosted by Student Accessibility Services.
Share familiarity with various campus resources, connecting mentees to those resources as appropriate.
Assist students in identifying challenges related to their college experience and provide tools to help support effective and appropriate problem-solving.
Participate in supervision, assigned training and scheduled staff meetings.
Maintain supportive and open communication with students while upholding professional boundaries.
Communicate regularly with their supervisor to provide updates on the status of their assigned mentees & document mentoring sessions.
Accurately maintain and submit time sheet.
Serve as a role model for incoming BSU students by displaying a positive approach to university life.
Facilitate small group and one-on-one training about topics relevant to accessibility, equity, advocacy, and inclusion at Bridgewater State University and beyond.
Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, disability rights & advocacy throughout the Bridgewater State University community.
Complete other duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications Requirements
Minimum of one academic year of experience as an SAS mentor required.
Knowledgeable of campus resources and student services, as well as how to access them.
Good academic standing.
Familiar with Blackboard, Infobear, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and other related BSU platforms
Experience with and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities, including specific experience with one or more of the following identities/communities: People with both visible and invisible disabilities, people of color, minoritized groups and immigrant populations, people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions, first-generation students, people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Energy, enthusiasm, self-direction, patience, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse student/faculty/staff/community population.
Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information. Preferred Qualifications
Experience in working with individuals with disabilities.
Experience in a related position such as camp counselor, orientation leader, resident assistant, etc.
Member of Student Accessibility Services, Access Advocates, CPDC, Best Buddies or other related organization/department on campus
Active participant in campus events, clubs, sports, etc.
