Job Description SUBJECT:
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

PRINCIPAL
This position is accountable for assisting the principal with the administration and the efficient operation of all aspects of the school facility consistent with sound educational principles and philosophy of education which strongly emphasizes student learning and success. This individual is responsible for assuming total responsibility in the absence of the principal. Schools in the Worcester Public Schools serve as an integral part of the lives of students and their families, and the successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to building and maintaining relationships with students, families, business partners, and community organizations.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Responsible for involvement in the academic process, including supervision and instruction. 2. Responsible for contributing to the optimum attendance of all students through close communication with parents, teachers, students and counselors. 3. Responsible for developing a sound discipline process and for reinforcing procedures defined by the policy statement of the Worcester Public Schools on student behavior. 4. Responsible for effective supervision of staff consistent with Worcester Public Schools' policy and collective bargaining agreements. 5. Responsible for effective public relations through continual positive promotion of the school and its students at all opportunities. 6. Responsible for assisting the building principal in exploring, assessing and implementing educational concepts that enhance teaching and learning under the framework of the Massachusetts Common Core of Learning. 7. Responsible for effective usage of school supplies and for timely distribution, monitoring, and acquisition of proper and pertinent textbooks through close communication with department heads and teachers. 8. Responsible for assisting the building principal for promoting a school climate that fosters high student expectations and employs appropriate strategies that address multiple learning styles. 9. Responsible for effective coordination of day-to-day functions and activities through close communication with all departments and administrators. 10.Responsible for close supervision of the educational process and effective communication with academic and counseling staff in all issues regarding students. 11.Responsible for contributing to the treatment and mainstreaming of students with special needs through close communication with the Special Education Department, its teachers and central office staff. 12.Responsible for working with building principal in developing master schedule for assigning staff and students. Must be familiar with alternative scheduling methods. 13.Responsible for effective utilization of teachers and staff through ongoing studies of requirements. 14.Responsible for supervising the daily use of school facilities in the area of both academic and non-academic activities, including usage of school facilities by community groups. 15.Responsible for providing equal educational and employment opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, homelessness, or disability. 16.Performance of all other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1 .Massachusetts DESE Licensure as a Principal/Assistant Principal
PK-6 2. SEI
Endorsement 2. A minimum of a Master's Degree in an appropriate field. 3. Basic knowledge of educational organization, administration, supervision, and curriculum development. 4. Skill in relating to and communicating with groups and individuals such as parents, students, teachers, administrators and School Committee. 5. Skill in discussing student needs and development with parents. 6. Working knowledge of techniques of classroom management/discipline.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Experience in urban school administration, including collaborating with social service agencies. 2. Experience in multicultural education, including curriculum and staff development.
WORK YEAR
185 Day•Pupil session days, plus five (5) non-pupil session days
SALARY:
Appropriate step on teachers' salary schedule Work schedules on non-pupil session days will be arranged by the building principal after consultation with the assistant principal.
