Currently, KIPP Michigan operates 1 school: KIPP Detroit Imani Academy Elementary School. KIPP Detroit Imani Academy is the first KIPP school in the state of Michigan and in the city of Detroit. KIPP Detroit Imani Academy opened in Fall 2022 in the Warrendale neighborhood on the west side of Detroit. We believe the destiny of students from Detroit is limitless and students should not be bound by their circumstances. Unfortunately, in America, there is still a link between socioeconomic status and educational attainment. KIPP Detroit Imani Academy seeks to eradicate this injustice. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Lower Academy Dean is responsible for leading a team of K-2 teachers to create a joyful, anti-racist, academically excellent culture, and is laser-focused on the instructional leadership required to drive student outcomes. They will dream audaciously on behalf of our scholars, and enact this through the creation and management of systems that foster a culture of continuous learning and growth among their staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The most critical role of a Dean is to serve as an instructional leader who protects 75% of their time to be dedicated to driving teacher performance, and thus student outcomes. The key responsibilities of a Dean are to create & manage systems
- cultural, operational, and academic
- that keep instruction sacred, drive academy-wide professional development & walkthroughs in alignment with KIPP's Arc of the Year rubric, and facilitate cohesive coaching cycles that increase teacher skill to increase student achievement.
Uphold Organizational Vision In collaboration with the Leadership Team, develop strategic plans to achieve schoolwide annual goals within their academy, prioritizing resources effectively Establish an ambitious, data-driven vision and goals aligned with KIPP Detroit Imani Academy's schoolwide priorities Own overall academy program design, including setting and monitoring progress towards program goals & creation of key deliverables Drive Instructional Excellence Enhance staff's expertise in effective instructional design, academic standards, and response to data
- including but not limited to academy-wide professional development Lead academy-wide walkthroughs to ensure high-quality instruction and provide actionable feedback Facilitate data-driven systems to analyze student performance and adjust instructional strategies Monitor instructional outcomes and teacher progress to support continuous improvement for all learners
- including being a critical part of the MTSS process and IEP Team decisions in service of all Diverse Learners' achievement Collaborate with school leadership and teacher teams to use data to drive instructional decision-making and goal setting Provide 8 hours/week of Tier 3 intervention directly to identified students Develop Faculty and Talent Pipeline Execute cohesive coaching cycles, empowering teachers as true leaders of their results Provide stretch assignments and development opportunities that center students and align with identified teacher-leaders' goals Cultivate a diverse, high-potential teacher-leadership pipeline from paraprofessionals, co-teachers, lead teachers, mentor teachers, and grade and/or department-level leads within their academy Facilitate the schoolwide vision for teacher evaluation, performance metrics, and retention within their academy Foster Positive School Culture Build and manage systems that enable focus on teaching and learning Model and reinforce expectations for teachers, students, and families on school-wide practices Create equitable academic and culture routines & procedures, grounded in our core values Create, manage, and oversee key schoolwide culture moments in common spaces including but not limited to arrival, breakfast, lunch, dismissal, assemblies and/or celebrations of culture & learning Act as first responders in behavior intervention within their academy.
This includes direct intervention with students and coaching teachers to ensure their classrooms optimize conditions for learning and high academic achievement. QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated proficiency in leading through change, executing on major initiatives, and leading cross-departmental work Excellent relationship builder with proven experience managing diverse stakeholders, leading change, and creating champions to support an organizational mission Ability to analyze and use qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis to drive decision making; strong judgment Strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and flexibility to accommodate a high level of responsibility, multiple priorities, and a changing environment Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a proven ability to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks Master's Degree or higher from an accredited University or College preferred Valid state teaching certification (Required) Administrator certification preferred Have a minimum of five years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience in education with a demonstrable track record of student achievement results Participate in a Criminal Records Check [as required by Academy Board Policy]
