About Elmwood Village Charter School The Elmwood Village Charter Schools provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment that recognizes student capability, fosters their connectedness to their immediate and broader communities, and offers them ways to contribute to school life. EVCS believes that all students can and will learn at high levels when provided with the right learning conditions. The Role We are looking for a dedicated and creative Assistant Principal who is passionate about urban education. You will be responsible for fostering a school culture that is inclusive, academically challenging, and grounded in the EVCS mission. Position Summary The Assistant Principal works in close partnership with the Building Principal to uphold the school's charter, build a positive culture, and ensure high academic and behavioral standards. The Assistant Principal plays a critical role in daily school operations, student culture management using the Responsive Classroom approach, staff culture, and instructional leadership. Key Responsibilities 1. School Culture & Student Support (Put Students First) Foster a joyful, safe, rigorous, and student-centered school culture that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion. Oversee the implementation of the school-wide Responsive Classroom / Restorative Practices framework to support students' social-emotional development. Uphold the EVCS Student Code of Conduct with fairness, empathy, and consistency; manage student disciplinary procedures and proactively communicate with families. Act as the School's DASA Coordinator - respond to and investigate all DASA claims in accordance with state laws and EVCS policies and procedures. Be highly visible and accessible during the school day-actively engaging with students and staff during arrival, dismissal, transitions, and lunch/recess periods. 2. Instructional Leadership & Staff Support (Always Seek to Be Better) Collaborate with the Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI), and Instructional Coaches to monitor classroom instruction and academic rigor. Conduct frequent classroom observations, walk-throughs, and formal evaluations to provide actionable feedback to teachers. Analyze student performance and behavioral data to implement urgent, strategic action plans that target learning gaps. Assist in delivering and supporting high-quality professional development aligned with EVCS strategic goals. 3. School Operations & Incident Command (Act with Urgency) Manage day-to-day building operations in coordination with the Principal, Front Office Staff, and Building Manager. Collaborate with the Operations Department to ensure school safety plans are executed with absolute fidelity. Serve as a key member of the emergency response team (and Incident Commander in the Principal's absence). Address operational bottlenecks, schedule adjustments, and student safety concerns with a high sense of urgency and solution-oriented thinking. 4. Collaboration & Community Engagement (Work as a Team) Build trusting, direct, and collaborative relationships with teachers, instructional assistants, parents, and the EVCS community. Participate in tactical leadership meetings and serve as an active member of the school's leadership ecosystem. Partner with the special education and wellness teams to ensure compliance and support for all learners in an inclusive environment. Model professional standards, active listening, and a patient, collaborative tone at all times.
Qualifications & Skills Education:
Master's Degree in Education required; Master's in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or a closely related field preferred.
Certification:
Valid New York State School Teaching Certification required; School Building Leader (SBL) certification preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of successful classroom teaching experience (experience in charter schools or urban education environments preferred). Prior leadership experience is highly valued.
Knowledge/Mindset:
Strong familiarity or training in Responsive Classroom methodology and Restorative Justice. Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and inclusive education.
