Job Description

Acts as the instructional leader, manager, and administrative advocate for each school within a defined geographic region consisting of high schools, their feeder schools, and associated alternative and special education facilities. Initial screenings for this position will take place on May 8, 2026.

No Qualifications:
Required Master's degree. Eight (8) years of experience in elementary or secondary school administration, some of which shall have been at the principal level or in senior management within an educational organization. Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience. Postgraduate educational license with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to assignment. Endorsement in administration and supervision Prek-12. Knowledge of PreK-12 principles and practices of public school administration Knowledge of administrative methods and techniques. Knowledge of research and current trends in public school education. Ability to direct and coordinate the activities of a region of schools. Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to develop an effective working relationship with the school and department staff, governmental leaders, outside advocacy groups, and community members. Preferred Doctoral degree.

Assistant Superintendent Major Duties/Essential Functions:
As a region assistant superintendent, is responsible for student achievement. Directs the monitoring and assessment of the achievement of each school within the region, visits schools on a regular basis. Partners with the appropriate departments to review, evaluate, and approve school plans and makes recommendations for improved student achievement. Coordinates the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and materials at the region level. Ensures that the instructional needs of each school are addressed promptly and completely. Reviews proposals for new educational or administrative programs and supports the implementation of approved programs. Acts as a broker/advocate with every Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) department for all schools within the region. Ensures both the implementation of FCPS policies and procedures and the compliance with state and federal mandates. Recommends the appointment of principals and selects staff personnel for the region; mentors and evaluates principals and staff and ensures provision of appropriate staff development opportunities. Acts as a liaison with families and family groups, civic agencies and related community groups. Maintains oral and written communications; provides essential feedback from the community to the schools. Recognizes and is sensitive to the multicultural needs of schools, staff and community. Ensures articulation and communication within the region; maintains communication and cooperation with other regions. Maintains liaison with appropriate government agencies and professional groups; serves on advisory boards and committees. Allocates discretionary school resources. Maintains, approves, and publishes the general calendar for the region. Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
