04/29/2026 Position Summary Lynchburg City Schools seeks a strong, student-centered leader to serve as Principal at the elementary level. The principal will drive academic achievement while ensuring a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for young learners and staff. This role requires a visible, engaged leader who builds a culture of high expectations, consistency, and collaboration, with a strong focus on foundational literacy, numeracy, and whole-child development aligned to Virginia Department of Education expectations. The ideal candidate is: A decisive and confident leader who follows through Collaborative and team-oriented Student-focused, balancing care and developmentally appropriate expectations Visible, approachable, and present throughout the school Skilled in building systems that ensure structure, consistency, and support for young learners Results-driven with a strong sense of urgency around student growth
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Lead and monitor high-quality instruction with a strong emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy Use data to drive decisions, monitor student progress, and adjust strategies in alignment with VDOE standards and accreditation expectations Monitor curriculum implementation to ensure alignment, rigor, and effectiveness in meeting student needs Support the effective use of instructional technology to enhance student learning Establish and lead grade-level teams and PLCs to strengthen instructional practices and student outcomes Develop and implement school improvement plans aligned with the Division Strategic Plan Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and nurturing school environment appropriate for elementary learners Implement and uphold clear, fair, and consistent student behavior expectations Promote a positive school climate that fosters respect, engagement, and high expectations for all students Collaborate with families and early childhood providers to support smooth transitions into elementary school Build strong relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners Support, evaluate, and develop staff through clear expectations, ongoing feedback, and professional learning Plan and implement staff development aligned with instructional priorities and the Division Strategic Plan Assign staff responsibilities based on student needs, staff strengths, and division guidelines Partner with Human Resources to recruit, retain, recognize, and support high-quality staff Oversee daily school operations, including scheduling, supervision, and building management Ensure school facilities are safe, clean, secure, and conducive to learning Manage school resources, including budget and materials, responsibly and transparently Communicate clearly and consistently with staff, students, families, and the community Implement division policies, regulations, and directives, including timely reporting and documentation Support and evaluate school-community partnerships and engagement efforts Delegate responsibilities as appropriate to ensure effective school leadership in the principal's absence

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possess a Virginia postgraduate professional license with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 or eligibility for such an endorsement Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level Documented successful school leadership experience (assistant principal or principal required) Demonstrated success in improving student achievement, particularly in early literacy and numeracy Experience creating safe, structured, and developmentally appropriate learning environments Evidence of effective student behavior systems and positive school climate Proven ability to build relationships and lead collaboratively
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of elementary instructional practices, curriculum alignment, and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), with emphasis on early literacy and numeracy Knowledge of data analysis, assessment systems, and continuous improvement aligned with VDOE expectations Knowledge of child development and effective practices for supporting young learners Knowledge of school operations, behavior systems, and safety protocols Skill in analyzing student data to monitor progress and implement strategies to improve outcomes Skill in coaching and evaluating staff through observations, feedback, and professional development Skill in building strong relationships and communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders Skill in organizing and managing school operations effectively Ability to lead a culture of high expectations, accountability, and continuous improvement Ability to establish and maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for young learners Ability to collaborate with families, staff, and community partners to support student success Ability to balance instructional leadership with operational management responsibilities
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Directly supervises all school employees, including but not limited to the administrative, custodial, instructional, and student support staff Participates in the hiring process and makes hiring decisions for other employees Instructs, trains, coaches, and mentors other employees Schedules (determine hours worked, time off), reviews, and monitors the work of other employees Completes written evaluations of other employees Makes recommendations for disciplinary actions against other employees

Reliable transportation, necessary Minimal travel within the City of Lynchburg as needed
