POSITION SUMMARY
The Multilingual Learner/English Learner Teacher provides instruction to elementary students (grades K-4). The goal of this position is to guide English Learners toward gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing; and to support teachers in general education classrooms who are working toward the same objective.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and teach both pull-out and push-in groups as well as co-teaching with classroom teachers Work collaboratively with members of the department and the school to support student learning and growth Maintain a safe, organized, and positive classroom environment that supports students' independent learning, collaboration, and choice; utilize a variety of effective instructional and management techniques Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse backgrounds Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain parental information when requested, promptly return phone calls, and answer emails; serve as a liaison with students, parents, teachers, and administrators Model SEI instructional techniques within the general education classroom; support classroom teachers in the use of ELD standards Support/instill motivation and achievement of non-English-speaking students. Properly identify MLs in a timely manner and be able to administer the
WIDA ACCESS, WIDA
screener and/or
WIDA MODEL
; assist in administering language proficiency and achievement tests (including all state testing), along with ongoing monitoring of student progress Maintain a database (spreadsheet) of EL and EL- eligible students, including home-school communication, testing data, and levels of support. Assist in developing language acquisition support plans (EL plans) for all EL students and work with classroom teachers to implement plans. Perform all such duties as requested by the Principal or Assistant Superintendent.
KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)
Certification:
English as a Second Language (ESL) Experience working with and/or teaching elementary students, and an understanding of the needs of students at this age Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others Strong communication and interpersonal skills in order to have ongoing communication Candidates with familiarity with ACCESS/WIDA, Fundations, DIBELS and/or who are bilingual are strongly preferred and encouraged to apply
