Little Water Prep is a growing K-5 public charter school in Poughkeepsie, New York, committed to providing a nurturing and academically rigorous environment for all students. The Elementary Science Teacher at Little Water Prep plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, standards-aligned science instruction that fosters inquiry, critical thinking, and a love of discovery. The teacher designs and implements rigorous, hands-on, and culturally responsive science lessons, integrates literacy and discussion into science learning, and uses data to inform instruction. They build strong relationships with students and families, maintain clear and consistent classroom systems, and collaborate with colleagues to ensure all scholars meet or exceed academic expectations while thriving in a structured, supportive, and joyful environment.Key Responsibilities Instructional Excellence:
Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned science lessons aligned to the Little Water Prep Science curriculum and New York State Science Learning Standards Design and facilitate hands-on investigations, experiments, and inquiry-based learning experiences Integrate reading, writing, and academic discourse into science instruction to build content knowledge and vocabulary Use effective strategies, including Total Participation Techniques (TPT), to ensure all students are actively engaged Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, abilities, and interests Leverage technology and innovative tools to enhance scientific exploration and understandingClassroom Management and Culture:
Establish and maintain a structured, positive, and affirming classroom environment, including clear expectations for safety and materials use Build strong relationships with students rooted in respect, curiosity, and high expectations Implement restorative practices and positive behavior supports Foster a safe, inclusive, and joyful classroom culture that encourages scientific thinking and collaboration Follow all school safety protocols, especially during hands-on and experimental activitiesData-Driven Instruction:
Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student understanding of concepts Analyze student data and work samples to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies Collaborate with colleagues to plan targeted interventions and enrichment in science Support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)Collaboration and Professional Growth:
Participate in professional development and team meetings Collaborate with instructional leaders and colleagues to improve practice Set professional goals, seek feedback, and engage in continuous reflectionFamily and Community Engagement:
Build strong relationships with families through consistent communication Provide regular updates on student academic and social-emotional progress Facilitate conferences and family engagement opportunitiesAdditional Responsibilities:
Model professionalism, a growth mindset, and commitment to the school's mission Participate in school-wide events and community-building activitiesPhysical and Logistical Requirements:
Work extended hours as needed for events or programming Lift and carry up to 20 pounds (e.g., materials, student work) Navigate stairs and move between floors as needed Maintain consistent, on-site attendance during school hours and eventsQualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field (Master's preferred) Valid New York State Teaching certification (or in progress of) Minimum of 2 years teaching experience (elementary preferred; charter experience a plus) Strong instructional, classroom management, and student engagement skills Commitment to equity, inclusion, and high student achievement Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills Experience using data to inform instruction Commitment to continuous professional growthCompensation:
Salary Range:
$60,000 - $70,000 (commensurate with experience) Benefits include: health, dental, paid time off, retirement options, and professional development Compensation is based on qualifications, experience, and certificationsPay:
