ABOUT THE DISTRICT
The Wilkinsburg School District is a small, urban public school district serving approximately 500 students. The district operates two elementary schools, offering education from Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Through an educational partnership, students in grades 7-12 attend Pittsburgh Public Schools, gaining access to expanded academic programs, extracurricular activities, and support services. The Wilkinsburg School District is dedicated to advancing academic excellence and promoting the social and emotional well-being of all its students.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Elementary Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-based instruction to students in a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. This role focuses on fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, and a love of learning for all students. The teacher is committed to promoting educational equity by ensuring all students have access to engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Additionally, the teacher serves as a resource and partner for families and colleagues, supporting student success through collaboration, communication, and shared responsibility. The Elementary Teacher is a member of the Wilkinsburg Education Association (WEA) and is subject to the conditions of employment as outlined in the negotiated contract. The position reports directly to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Curriculum Development Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in core subject areas, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Develop and implement lesson plans with clear learning targets, aligned to district curriculum and state standards. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, backgrounds, and interests of students. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technologies, and resources to create engaging learning experiences and promote student achievement. Incorporate culturally responsive teaching practices that reflect and honor students' diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Integrate cross-curricular connections and real-world applications to deepen student understanding and relevance. Student Learning & Classroom Environment Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that supports all learners. Promote students' social-emotional development, responsibility, and independence. Implement effective classroom management strategies to maximize instructional time and student engagement. Foster a classroom culture that values learning, diversity, and inclusion. Classroom Management and Supervision Establish and maintain an organized classroom environment with effective behavior management systems in alignment with the school's PBIS initiative. Implement individualized and group reinforcement strategies to support student success. Oversee and support paraprofessionals, ensuring adherence to best practices and school policies. Assessment & Progress Monitoring Assess student learning using a variety of formative and summative assessments. Analyze student data to inform instruction and provide targeted support. Monitor and document student progress, maintaining accurate and timely records. Provide feedback to students to support growth and mastery of learning objectives. Professional Responsibilities Maintain a high level of professionalism, ethical conduct, and commitment to continuous improvement. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional practices. Adhere to school policies, procedures, and district expectations. Respond appropriately to student needs and emergency situations to ensure safety and well-being. Collaboration and Communication Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and educational priorities. Work collaboratively with general education teachers and staff to support inclusive practices. Lead IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions. Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and strong moral character at all times. Perform additional duties as assigned by the principals and/or the Superintendent.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field is required; Master's degree preferred.; a valid Pennsylvania Elementary Education teaching certification is required. Knowledge of child development, instructional best practices, and state academic standards. Experience working with elementary-aged students in a classroom setting is preferred. Ability to differentiate instruction and support diverse learners. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Experience working with students with diverse learning, behavioral, social-emotional, and developmental needs. Experience collaborating with school personnel, families, and community agencies to support student growth and success. Ability to obtain and maintain all required clearances in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Additional qualifications and/or skills as determined by the Board of School Directors/Superintendent.
