Norfolk and Virginia Beach Lower Schools Job Summary The teacher of our advanced academics program is responsible for organizing and supporting modified instructional strategies to meet the needs of advanced students and to develop the strengths and talents of all students.
Planning:
  • Designing or selecting appropriate instructional modifications for advanced students and collaborating with the classroom teachers for implementation.
  • Working in coordination with classroom teachers in planning and developing a program which is standards-aligned and meets the needs of our students.
  • Conducting appropriate planning meetings with kindergarten and first teachers as well as with 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers to determine student and teacher needs and to plan enrichment and co-teaching lessons.
Programming:
  • Developing and monitoring the modified strategies for advanced students in coordination with classroom teachers as appropriate.
  • Providing direct consultation to classroom teachers on how to implement instructional strategies.
  • Team teaching with classroom teachers to support advanced students when appropriate.
  • Reporting to classrooms at appointed time to present lessons and/or team teach with classroom teachers.
  • Teaching a whole-class lesson once per week for each classroom k-1.
  • Teaching a Language Arts and a Math lesson as either a whole-class or small-group lesson for each classroom in grades 2-5 that models the incorporation of higher-level thinking skills and best practices in teaching
  • Participating in the in-school staffing and screening process as appropriate.
  • Participating on evaluation teams for advanced students as appropriate.
  • Providing specialized instruction to individual and small groups of advanced students when necessary to support learning in the content areas.
  • Assisting in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
