(
Note:
we are a new and growing school and may have two elementary teacher positions open for next school year as we assess enrollment.) Located on 200 acres of forest, meadow, and coastline on Whidbey Island, Salish Sea Academy is a nature-based Montessori school rooted in curiosity, independence, and real-world learning. Our students spend meaningful time outdoors, engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary work, and are supported in developing both academic confidence and a strong sense of self. We are looking for a teacher who brings both Montessori integrity and creativity—someone who can balance structure with flexibility, and who is excited to integrate nature, project-based learning, and community into the elementary experience. The Lead Teacher is responsible for leading a classroom that supporting students in their academic, social, and emotional development. This role offers the opportunity to build on Montessori foundations while providing more focused, grade-level instruction, deeper project work, and increasing student independence. Deliver engaging instruction across subject areas (math, language, science, cultural studies) Build on Montessori principles while adapting to a single-grade classroom structure Support individualized learning and student growth Integrate outdoor and nature-based learning into the curriculum Foster independence, collaboration, and critical thinking Maintain a prepared and organized learning environment Communicate regularly with families about student progress and classroom life Collaborate with other teachers to ensure program continuity Participate in school events, field experiences, and community-building activities AMI or AMS Montessori Elementary OR strong alignment with Montessori philosophy and openness to learn about Montessori (please apply even if you don't feel like you have all the Montessori credentials!) Experience teaching elementary-aged children Ability to balance structure with flexibility in a non-traditional model Strong classroom leadership and organizational skills Interest in outdoor, place-based, or experiential learning Excellent communication and collaboration skills We understand that great teachers come from a variety of backgrounds.
