The FY25 minimum is $76,383. The Stanford University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Department of Chemical Engineering (ChemE) invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the labs of Dr. Meagan Mauter and Dr. William Tarpeh. This interdisciplinary position will focus on the development of process modeling techniques for the extraction and purification of critical minerals using innovative electrified methods.Key Responsibilities:
- Baseline existing mineral extraction processes to establish performance metrics and identify opportunities for high value materials, process, and systems innovation.
- Develop detailed process models for new electrified extraction and purification technologies, incorporating thermodynamic, kinetic, and transport phenomena.
- Optimize the design and control of electrified processes to effectively manage the heterogeneous and dynamic feed compositions associated with non-traditional sources of critical minerals and rare earth elements.
- Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to integrate modeling results into experimental workflows.
- Prepare high-quality research manuscripts and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in related research projects.

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in process modeling, particularly in chemical or environmental systems. Experience with optimization software (e.g., WaterTAP) and programming languages (e.g., Python) is highly desirable. Familiarity with the principles of electrified mineral extraction and purification processes is advantageous but not required. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
