The University of Virginia's English Department and Writing and Rhetoric Program invites applications for Lecturer in English on the academic general faculty, expected to begin August 10, 2026. The core responsibilities of this position include teaching six courses per year, three each during the spring and fall terms. Typically, candidates will teach per semester two sections of first-year writing (ENWR 1510) and one section of either introduction to literature (a 2000-level ENGL course) or introduction to creative writing (a 2000-level ENCW course). This is a three-year, tenure-ineligible appointment without the possibility of renewal. (This is a non-renewable appointment.)
Description:
Minimum Qualification To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants should hold an MA in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related field at the time of appointment. Preferred Qualifications The successful applicant will preferably hold a PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related field, or an MFA in Creative Writing at the time of appointment. Also, successful applicants will have experience teaching first-year writing courses, using an inquiry-based approach, as well as introductory literature courses or introductory creative writing courses. This teaching experience should be at the college level.
