The mission of is to empower students to transform the world. Students at Truth will graduate ready for success in college, career, and life. They will serve as active agents in the construction of peace. They will know who they are, what they want, and where they are going. They can walk into any space, find their place, and make a powerful contribution. Truth achieves this vision through a Montessori education built upon student-led classrooms with a learning environment deliberately designed to enable student engagement in meaningful, authentic work and to foster a close-knit community where students pursue justice and practice stewardship. Truth currently serves a culturally diverse population of 6th to 12th grade students in Washington, DC.Position:
The Sojourner Truth School is an established and successful middle and high school that is growing and seeking a motivated and innovative ELA teacher to help us continue to build our high school program. Truth is seeking a teacher proficient in not only High School ELA I and ELA II content and instruction but also Advanced Placement (AP) content. Candidates should be excited to serve not only as a content teacher but also as a mentor and learning coach in an environment fostering student self-direction. Applicants should be inspired by and aligned to Truth's mission, and excited by the opportunity to expand their influence and the role of the teacher by guiding students through goal-setting, the creation of learning plans, and reflection. Truth strongly believes in the expertise and abilities of its teachers, and also that a culturally responsive and culturally sustaining curriculum should be created by those who work in the community and understand the interests and needs of the students therein. To this end, teachers at Truth contribute significantly to the curriculum design process. Truth also has a co-teaching model where teachers work in close collaboration to manage tasks and instruction, and the flow of students from one lesson to another. Teachers, like all other staff, should be fully invested in Truth's twoDesign Principles:
Students need to be prepared for life , not just for school. Each student's identity, voice, perspectives, and choices matter.Responsibilities:
Content Expert with Curriculum Design Skills Plan and implement lessons in ELA I and ELA II; Create a classroom environment that makes every single student feel welcome and appreciated; Collaborate with Humanities and STEM colleagues to plan and implement a thematic, interdisciplinary curriculum that prioritizes the development of key skills and habits of learning rather than just breadth of content; Co-planning and co-teaching as appropriate with a Special Education teacher (and ESL teacher where appropriate); Differentiate lessons and tasks to support and challenge a diverse range of skills Reflective Practitioner Actively engage in ongoing professional development Continually reflect on the effect that our biases may be having on students and their experience in and out of Truth; Regularly analyze and adjust curriculum based on student products and colleague feedback; Demonstrate a growth mindset with respect to new strategies and the consideration of feedback Learning Coach Serve as the mentor for ~15 students; Create a personalized, competency-based, and student-centered environment that believes in the possibility, promise, and potential in every student; Support students through goal-setting, the creation of their own learning plans, the implementation of their plans, and ongoing reflection; Build positive and strong relationships with students' familiesQualifications:

Physical Requirements Detailed Description Standing/Walking (50-70%) : Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during instruction or supervision. Capacity to move around the classroom and school premises, including climbing stairs. Sitting (20-40%) : Remaining in a stationary seated position for tasks such as administrative work, planning, or direct instruction in some teaching settings. Lifting/Carrying (5-10%) : Lifting light to moderate objects such as books, teaching materials, or classroom equipment (typically 10-25 pounds). Potentially helping students with physical disabilities or moving furniture for classroom setup. Reaching/Bending/Crouching (5-15%) : Extending the arms above shoulder level, forward, or sideways to access items. Flexing the body forward, often at the waist, to lower or retrieve objects from lower heights. Bending at the hips and knees to lower the body closer to the ground, often in a squatting position. Use of Hands (20-30%) : Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, or managing classroom technology such as projectors or smart boards. Hands are also used for demonstrations, guiding students with tasks, or handling classroom materials. Speaking/Hearing (90-100%) : Clear verbal communication with students, staff, and parents. Ability to hear student responses and conversations, especially in larger classrooms or group settings. Visual Requirements (90-100%) : Ability to read and interpret documents such as lesson plans, student work, or computer screens. Monitoring student activity both in the classroom and potentially during outdoor activities.
