Teaching Full Job Description Summary:
The primary function of a full-time certified English Language Learner (EL) teacher is to provide interventions and/or instruction to accelerate the student's ability speak, listen, read and write fluently in English and develop into directed, self-aware college ready learners. EL teachers plan in collaboration with the classroom content teacher to provide inclusive language and content instruction. They also plan language interventions and lessons for individual or small groups of students in need of language support. The specific duties of an EL teachers will vary from class to class, depending on the needs of the students.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Work closely with the other EL teachers, general education teachers, EL coordinator, and other members of the curriculum team. Assess incoming students to determine skill-level of the English language, EL support services, and classroom placement. Complete ILP forms for new and returning students. Distribute and communicate ILPs to appropriate teachers. Develop student language goals in 4 domains (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) based on WIDA ACCESS, W-APT, or WIDA Screener scores. Design and implement lesson plans for push-in and pull-out instruction for EL students. Provide assignment modification for gen-ed teachers based on student ILPs and EL teaching methodologies. Regularly conduct planning for lessons using commonly accepted professional practice (content, goals, assessment, re-teaching, differentiation, cultural sensitivity, etc.). Maintain and provide reasonable and meaningful student evaluation and communicate such information to students, parents, and students' gen-ed teachers. Actively participate in all department meetings and PDs. Consistently collaborate and communicate with other members of the EL department, as well as students' gen-ed teachers, and/or SPED teachers regarding student success, needs, best practices, and communication with student households. Display patience and cultural awareness.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current State of Hawaii Teacher Licensure. Successful completion of a teacher education program at an accredited college or university. Successful teaching experience. Excellent command of the English language. Familiarity with WIDA assessments. Commitment to collaboration and teaming. Ability to use appropriate assessment, instruction, and evaluation techniques. Knowledge of child and adolescent development and ability to apply that knowledge to the selection and application of curriculum materials and instructional practices. Knowledge of skills and strategies necessary to meet the diverse needs of students. Knowledge and skill in culturally responsive teaching and learning. Knowledge of the relationships between teaching and learning. Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning. Commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and reflection. Reliability in attendance, punctuality, and follow-through.
Desired Qualifications:
Certified in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages K-12. Experience working with ELL students from Polynesia, Micronesia, and/or Melanesia.
