Full-Time, Exempt Position Purpose Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the ELA Teacher develops students' literacy skills across reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. The teacher cultivates a love of literature and communication by guiding students in grades 3-8 through progressively complex texts, composition, vocabulary development, and critical thinking — preparing them to be effective communicators and lifelong readers. Essential Performance Responsibilities Develops, plans, and delivers strong Tier 1 ELA instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards for grades 3-8, including literature, informational text, foundational reading skills, writing, speaking, listening, and language conventions. Creates a safe, inclusive, and student-centered classroom environment that fosters a culture of reading and communication. Designs and implements lesson plans that build sequential literacy skills, challenge students, and connect reading and writing to meaningful contexts. Teaches core ELA skills including reading comprehension, literary analysis, narrative and expository writing, grammar and conventions, vocabulary acquisition, and oral communication. Guides students through close reading of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational texts at appropriate complexity levels. Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, English Language Learners, and advanced learners. Conducts ongoing formative and summative assessments; analyzes data to monitor student progress and refine instruction. Maintains familiarity with Indiana state standardized assessments (ILEARN) and aligns curriculum and instruction to support student achievement. Communicates regularly and effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and classroom expectations. Maintains accurate, complete records of student attendance, grades, and learning activities in compliance with district and state requirements. Collaborates with grade-level teams, reading specialists, special education staff, and ELL coordinators to support literacy development across all learners. Manages appropriate texts, writing resources, technology tools, and instructional materials to support literacy learning. Participates in professional development, faculty meetings, and school improvement initiatives. Upholds school and district behavioral standards and fosters a respectful, literate classroom culture. Additional Duties Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee in support of the school's educational mission. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong content knowledge across grades 3-8 ELA, including reading development, writing process, grammar, and literary analysis. Experience supporting struggling readers and implementing intervention strategies preferred. Knowledge of current literacy research and pedagogy, including balanced literacy, structured literacy approaches, and writing workshop models. Understanding of differentiated instruction and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Ability to use reading assessment data (e.g., running records, Lexile levels, writing samples) to drive instructional decisions. Proficiency with educational technology and learning management systems. Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues. Knowledge of applicable Indiana and federal education laws and regulations. Qualifications Indiana Teaching License with endorsement in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) or Middle School English/Language Arts (grades 5-9) required Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, English, or a related field required. Master's degree preferred. Prior successful teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level preferred. Demonstrated record of improving student achievement outcomes preferred.
