Job Description

The Rivers School — a 6-12 co-ed independent day school in Weston, MA, just outside Boston — seeks professionals who are looking to join a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming school community. This parental leave upper school English position for Fall 2026 will consist of teaching four sections (likely two AP English 11 and two English 10) and possibly contributing to the co-curricular life of the school through coaching or club mentoring. The position will begin with opening professional community meetings at the end of August 2026 and run through December 1, 2026. Our English Department is grounded in the belief that literature and writing empower students to engage meaningfully with the world, fostering empathy and personal growth. For this reason, we are looking for a mission-driven educator. The ideal candidate will be a creative and thoughtful practitioner who embraces innovation and is eager to explore the deeper questions of what it means (and should mean) to teach English today given the rise of generative AI. Because students at Rivers thrive in the context of supportive relationships, we seek someone who cares deeply for students' wellbeing and understands the importance of connecting with students as part of inspiring their engagement in the classroom, as well as someone who enjoys collaborating with their colleagues. Candidates for this position should possess strong organizational skills and a commitment to advancing the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mission in addition to two years' experience teaching English (preferably at the high school level). A bachelor's degree in English or a related field is required; a master's degree in English, education, or creative writing is preferred. Rivers encourages interest from candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, experience, and perspectives among our professional and school community. We recognize that skilled and innovative individuals follow a variety of pathways in life, and we enthusiastically invite applications from those who may have experience that meets our qualifications in non-traditional ways. Rivers offers BIPOC affinity, LGBTQ+ affinity, and white allyship spaces for professionals, as well as institutional professional development to support and enrich our work around equity and access. In addition to mentorship from the Department Chair and Dean of Faculty, all first-year faculty members benefit from a close relationship with a peer mentor and take part in an onboarding program led by the Director of New Faculty Development. Rivers Mission Statement & Core Values English Department Mission Statement Salary range: $70,000 to $115,000 annually
