Job Description

High School ELA Teacher (2026-2027)
Job Summary:
At the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, teachers engage in collaborative, hands-on learning that puts the student at the center of the experience. Whether it be through two-week agro forestry intensives or collaborative projects in the classroom, all educators are expected to embrace innovative, engaging practices that harness student interests and produce meaningful, real-world results and products. The ideal English Lanuage Arts candidate at MeANS is an experienced and innovative educator who values project-based learning in a non-traditional environment and is passionate about educating students on the role civic engagement can play in creating change in our community. At MeANS we value autonomy, flexibility, and student-driven projects that engage a wide variety of learners and help them connect academic content to their lives and values as young adults.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Create project-based curricula integrated with our school's themes of agriculture, forestry and the environment. Provide direct instruction in multiple sections of 9th and 10th Grade ELA, and two-week intensives. Help to develop and implement student presentations and reflections on individual and collaborative learning. Serve as an advisor for a small group of students by supporting them daily with career and college preparation. Participate in weekly faculty and professional development meetings. Develop, research, and assess student academic growth in a method that is congruent with how they learn. Support students interested in increasing their scores on college related tests such as the Accuplacer, SATs and Advanced Placement exams. Share all duties with other staff such as lunch and elective supervision. Employ restorative practices to build community and address student behavior. Facilitate student-led conferences for advisees while developing quarterly progress reports. Contact advisees' parents on a weekly basis updating them on student progress. Interest and enthusiasm for improving skills by attending professional development opportunities. Other duties as they are assigned.
Qualifications:
3-5 years of experience working with students in an ELA classroom is preferred. Certification in secondary English instruction or an advanced degree. Satisfactory reference and background checks. A valid Maine driver's license.
