III / AP
English Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing rigorous instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the College Board AP curriculum. The teacher fosters a learning environment that promotes critical thinking, effective communication, analytical reading, academic writing, and college readiness for students in grades 10-12. The teacher prepares students for success on the AP English Language and Composition and/or AP English Literature and Composition Exam while ensuring all students develop the literacy skills necessary for graduation and postsecondary success. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction Plan and deliver engaging daily lessons aligned with the North Carolina English Language Arts Standards. Implement the College Board AP curriculum and instructional framework for AP English courses. Differentiate instruction to meet the academic needs of diverse learners, including Exceptional Children (EC), English Learners (EL), and academically gifted students. Utilize research-based instructional strategies that promote reading comprehension, literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and effective writing. Teach students to analyze complex literary and informational texts through close reading and evidence-based discussion. Prepare students for End-of-Course assessments (where applicable) and AP examinations. Incorporate technology and digital resources to enhance instruction and student engagement. Maintain high academic expectations while creating a supportive and inclusive classroom culture. Curriculum and Assessment Develop lesson plans, unit plans, pacing guides, and assessments aligned with district and state expectations. Design formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress. Analyze student achievement data to adjust instructional practices. Provide timely, meaningful feedback on student writing through conferences, rubrics, and written comments. Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student progress using district-approved systems. Participate in curriculum development and vertical alignment activities within the English department. Classroom Management Establish and maintain a positive, structured classroom environment conducive to learning. Implement school-wide behavior expectations and restorative practices when appropriate. Promote student responsibility, collaboration, and respectful communication. Ensure classroom procedures maximize instructional time and student engagement. Communication Maintain regular communication with students, parents, and guardians regarding academic progress and classroom expectations. Participate in parent conferences, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and student support meetings as needed. Collaborate with counselors, administrators, instructional coaches, and support staff to improve student outcomes. Professional Responsibilities Maintain an active North Carolina Professional Educator License in English Language Arts. Participate in required professional development and district training. Attend faculty meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), department meetings, and school events. Remain current on instructional best practices, literacy research, and College Board AP updates. Uphold professional ethics as outlined in the North Carolina Educator Code of Ethics. AP English Responsibilities Prepare students for the AP English Language and Composition and/or AP English Literature and Composition Exam. Integrate college-level reading, writing, and analytical thinking into daily instruction. Teach rhetorical analysis, synthesis writing, literary analysis, argument writing, and research-based writing. Conduct timed writing activities and AP-style assessments. Analyze AP student performance data to improve instructional practices. Attend College Board-approved AP Summer Institutes or other professional learning opportunities when available. Promote equitable access to AP coursework and encourage student participation in advanced academic opportunities. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, or a closely related field. Valid North Carolina Professional Educator License in English Language Arts (Grades 9-12) or eligibility for licensure. Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in English, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field. Experience teaching English III and/or Advanced Placement English courses. Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) training or College Board certification. Experience with Canvas, Google Classroom, Microsoft Office, and educational technology platforms. Demonstrated success improving student achievement and AP exam performance. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expertise in American literature, rhetoric, composition, grammar, research, and literary analysis. Ability to facilitate engaging classroom discussions using inquiry-based instructional strategies. Strong organizational and classroom management skills. Ability to analyze assessment data and implement instructional interventions. Commitment to culturally responsive teaching and equitable instructional practices. Ability to collaborate effectively within professional learning communities. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and families. Lift and move instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Perform duties in a classroom environment requiring frequent movement and supervision of students.
