About Elmwood Village Charter School The Elmwood Village Charter Schools provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment that recognizes student capability, fosters their connectedness to their immediate and broader communities, and offers them ways to contribute to school life. The Role Elmwood Village Charter School (EVCS) is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and culturally responsive Special Area Teacher to join our dedicated team in Buffalo, NY. We are looking for an educator who values the whole child—fostering creativity, physical wellness, literacy, or linguistic proficiency—while maintaining a commitment to our mission of academic excellence and social-emotional growth in a diverse community. As a Special Area Teacher at EVCS, you will engage students through rigorous instructional activities, cultivating an environment where every child feels seen, heard, and challenged.
Key Responsibilities Instructional Excellence Instructional Excellence:
Implement a high-quality, standards-aligned curriculum tailored to [Art/Music/PE/Library/Dance/Spanish/Literacy/ENL] that meets the developmental needs of our K-8 student body.
Classroom Culture:
Maintain a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment that aligns with the EVCS school-wide behavioral expectations and the tenets of Responsive Classroom.
Student Engagement:
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students with IEPs and English Language Learners.
Community Integration:
Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers to integrate interdisciplinary themes into special area lessons. Plan schoolwide events and/or performances that showcase the content area.
Assessment & Reporting:
Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments; maintain accurate student records; and provide clear, growth-oriented feedback to students and families through report cards and conferences.
Professional Development:
Actively participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), and staff development workshops focused on continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Requirements Certification:
Possession of a valid New York State Teaching Certification (e.g., Literacy Specialist, English as a New Language, Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education, Library Media Specialist, Dance, or Spanish/World Languages).
Education:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Education or the relevant content area. (Masters degree preferred).
Experience:
Previous experience working with elementary or middle school-aged students in an urban school setting is highly valued.
Collaboration:
Exceptional interpersonal skills and a desire to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented school environment.
Communication:
Strong verbal and written communication skills for documentation and parent outreach, an ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
