04/30/2026 POSITION SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Principal or designee, the High School English Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in English Language Arts aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. The teacher fosters critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and effective communication skills while creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for students. This role contributes to student success academically and socially by promoting literacy development, analytical thinking, and real-world application of reading and writing skills, while ensuring adherence to School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws. The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can: Deliver standards-based English instruction aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning. Promote student achievement in reading, writing, language usage, and critical analysis. Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment. Prepare students to be effective communicators, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. Support the division's mission to serve every child, every day.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate English Language Arts lessons aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning. Teach English content including, but not limited to, reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing (argumentative, narrative, and expository), grammar, and vocabulary development. Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments; use results to adjust instruction and improve student outcomes. Foster student understanding of complex texts, effective writing techniques, and critical thinking skills. Promote the development of speaking, listening, and communication skills across a variety of contexts. Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessment data. Create a positive and structured classroom environment that supports student engagement and learning. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students. Integrate technology to enhance literacy instruction and student engagement. Collaborate with colleagues to support cross-curricular literacy and instructional improvement. Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding academic performance and expectations. Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and enhance instructional practices. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in English. Experience teaching high school-aged students is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of English Language Arts curriculum, literacy development, and instructional best practices. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of adolescent development and effective instructional strategies for high school students. Knowledge of English Language Arts content, including reading comprehension, writing instruction, grammar, and literary analysis. Knowledge of curriculum standards, including Virginia Standards of Learning for English. Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate engaging English instruction. Ability to assess student performance and adjust instruction based on data. Ability to manage a classroom environment effectively and promote student engagement. Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to integrate technology to support literacy instruction and assessment.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Supervises students during classroom instruction and related activities. Provides direction and guidance to instructional assistants, volunteers, or student teachers as assigned.TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Reliable transportation is necessary Daily travel between schools, LCS buildings, and local areas may be required for professional development Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg is requiredWORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
