Teaching Assistant for the University Writing Center, AY 2026-2027 (Anticipated) University of California Merced - 4.3 Merced, CA Job Details Part-time $70,720 a year 18 hours ago Qualifications Student mentoring Working with graduate students Research Student advising Workshop facilitation Marketing Entry level Full Job Description The University Writing Center (UWC) at UC Merced has the mission of promoting the value of writing across disciplines and outside of academia to support campus writers and enhance their approaches to writing. Under the general direction of the UWC's Director, the Graduate Writing Consultant (payroll title of Teaching Assistant) will provide support for fellow graduate students on their academic writing and scholarship as well as offer pedagogical support and mentoring for the UWC's undergraduate Writing Consultants.
Responsibilities of the position include:
Support for Graduate Writers (60%) Facilitate one-on-one consultations with graduate student writers to improve academic writing. Develop, market, and lead workshops, writing groups, and other relevant events in support of graduate student writers. Support for the UWC/Undergraduate Writing Consultants (40%) Collaborate with the UWC Director to support the UWC and its Undergraduate Writing Consultants through a focused project such as staff meetings and professional development, session observations and mentoring, research and assessment, and/or other projects relevant to the Graduate Consultants' expertise and interest.
Requirements of the position include:
Commitment to a fixed semester schedule of 20 hours per week. Participation in mandatory orientation/training prior to the start of instruction. Participation in mandatory bi-weekly staff meetings for UWC student employees (Fridays, 3:00 - 4:30)
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications UC Merced graduate student Experience with and understanding of multiple academic genres (e.g., literature review, fellowship applications, research reports, abstracts, etc.) Maintenance of a qualifying grade point average (per UC Merced's Graduate Policies & Procedures Handbook) Academically eligible to hold the appointment (per UC Merced's Graduate Policies & Procedures Handbook) Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally, linguistically, and educationally diverse community. Ability to work 20 hours per week for the duration of the appointment. Preferred qualifications Familiarity with the University Writing Center's mission, practices, and policies.
