Job Description:
The graduate student position will learn how to operate and maintain complex scientific instruments, how to communicate with and educate students, how to solve technical and interpersonal problems, and to give feedback to and effectively communicate with students and faculty. This requires strong attention to details skills, strong professional communication skills in various training, teaching, and corrective situations. The position also requires a high research instrument knowledge and some experience in working with them. This is needed to support the daily operations of the MBC by assisting Dr. Nemec in training researchers on the proper use of the autoclaves as well as the molecular imagers and analyzers, including the BioRad Gel Doc and BioRad ChemiDoc molecular imagers, Cytiva Typhoon multi-mode imager, and the QuantStudio6 QPCR. The graduate would also maintain the BSL2 shared cell culture facilities including scheduled decontamination and assist in training researchers in proper techniques. The graduate would perform ongoing maintenance and calibrations of highly specialized equipment such as the Northern Lights flow cytometer and the FACSMelody and Sony cell sorters, and help to ensure the main lab spaces are clean and organized. Working with the Dr Nemec, the graduate would assist in designing/redesigning and drafting training modules for researchers in the MBC. The student would also participate and possibly lead classes that are held within the MBC (
