The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Development, Illustration, and Entertainment Design.
Position Summary:
The Dean of Academic Affairs has comprehensive responsibility for all educational, budgetary, and administrative matters for the undergraduate and graduate programs at LCAD. The Dean is charged with guiding all academic programs and ensuring that they serve to effectively carry forth the mission, values, and goals of the institution by providing the necessary vision and leadership. The Dean is responsible for the advancement of the College's teaching, curriculum, assessment, evaluation, and practice and research in art and design. The Dean leads and implements the instruction of students, designs curriculum, and fosters a positive environment for academic aspects of the institution. This position works toward guiding the faculty in becoming more effective teachers and educators and in providing a motivational climate that engenders student success. All aspects of teaching and learning are under the purview of the Dean who is committed to student success as the priority goal of the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs Lead the development and launch of new academic programs and modalities (online, hybrid, etc.), ensuring alignment with institutional strategy and executing against timelines that support effective marketing, enrollment, and program viability. Lead the academic division with a contemporary vision and deep understanding of current and future trends in art and design education and industry in a competitive higher education landscape. Serve as an effective liaison and a strong advocate to executive leadership for the goals, interests, and values of the academic programs, faculty, and academic affairs staff. Collaborate with academic leaders and the student affairs team in order to offer support to the whole student. Ensure all academic units adhere to the College's policies and practices. Ensure that the College instills and advances a supportive climate characterized by a commitment to an inclusive an equitable community that values diversity and belonging. Participate in LCAD working-groups, task forces, and committees in order to advance the mission and goals of the academic units. Serves as primary academic representative in external partnerships, articulation agreements, and community outreach initiatives. Supports advancement, grant, and fundraising efforts related to academic programs. Curriculum and Instruction Provide strategic leadership for program and curricular development and transformation based on institutional strategic mission, goals, and objectives. Make and guide decisions related to instruction and curriculum and serve as chair of the curriculum committee. Monitor and manage, along with the department chairs, course offerings to meet college enrollment, student persistence, and retention goals. Coordinate and manage the implementation and use of instructional technology across academic departments, while exploring opportunities for pedagogical advancement through various modes of delivery. Represent campus instruction at the College with all appropriate committees and other college forums. Maintain the quality of instruction and academic programs through planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating these areas using evidence-based methods. Work with the Registrar in developing the semester class schedule while organizing the structure for class scheduling. Lead the College in staying current in areas of curriculum compliance and actively make changes and revisions where needed. Faculty + Staff Management and Advancement Provide oversight, mentorship, and direction for all program instruction, including supervision of department chairs and academic affairs staff, development and implementation of policy, performance evaluation, and support for continuous improvement of curriculum and instructional quality. Advance faculty growth and opportunities through professional development channels as well as champion faculty priorities. Develop and manage annual work plans and goals in collaboration with academic leaders and other key institutional stakeholders. Ensure an effective and responsible model for shared governance with faculty to carry out the teaching and learning mission of the College, such as providing clarity in the relationships, responsibilities, and engagement between the Dean's office, faculty senate, and faculty committees. Assist in determining faculty hiring needs and participate in recruitment and hiring of full-time faculty. Oversee faculty contracts per academic year and semester in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources. Participate with the Office of Human Resources, CFO, and President, in the assessment and review of faculty promotions, salary and rank levels, and analysis of comparative faculty salary and make recommendations to executive leadership. Serve as an intermediary and represent the interests of the faculty to senior staff, students, staff and alumni. Budget Management Manage and develop the budget for the instructional division through assisting in budget development, forecasting, and administration of approved funds with the CFO. Develop and manage, in conjunction with the President, CFO, and Office of Human Resources, the full academic affairs budget, making allocation decisions based on performance indicators, priorities, and strategic criteria. Guide department chairs in budgetary development and approval. Policy and Compliance Update and maintain, in conjunction with academic affairs leadership and the Office of Human Resources, the faculty handbooks, college catalog, and student achievement and academic sections of the LCAD website. Collaborate with the Director of Assessment + Accreditation on the institutional effectiveness plan/report and accreditation and compliance reporting as needed. Evaluation, Assessment, and Accreditation Engage in institutional assessment and research activities in conjunction with the Director of Assessment + Accreditation and department chairs. Strengthens relationships with accreditors, regulators, and educational partners. Review assessment reports and data and coordinate strategy for campus dissemination, website publication, accreditation documentation, strategic planning, budgeting, and other purposes. Provide strategic leadership and high-level oversight for assessment and accreditation. Coordinate with the Director of Assessment + Accreditation on the collection and analysis of data related to quality improvement and assessment cycles of all academic departments. Collaborate with the Director of Assessment + Accreditation to identify strategic goals and key success indicators that inform institutional planning, drawing on reports prepared by the Director of Assessment + Accreditation. Support accreditation efforts by supplying academic insights and ensuring faculty participation in processes overseen by the Director of Assessment + Accreditation/Accreditation Liaison Officer (curriculum and program effectiveness, student success, learning outcomes). Collaborate with the Director of Assessment + Accreditation and academic departments in planning and conducting assessment of student learning, goals, and outcomes for internal and external constituents.

Position Requirements, Experience, and Education:

Education MFA degree or other terminal degree in an associated field or commensurate education and experience required. Experience 5+ years of progressively responsible academic leadership experience in higher education, preferably within an art + design college or creative disciplines. 5+ years of college-level teaching experience as associate or full professor, preferably in an art and design program/environment, strongly preferred. 2+ years of experience with assessment and program review required. Experience in administration, including program and curricular development, assessment, policy development, personnel management, and budget management required. Experience managing academic budgets and allocating resources to support strategic and operational goals. Experience with academic advising preferred. Experience with program and curricular development required. Supervisory Responsibility This position supervises faculty and administrative support staff. Position Requirements Proven awareness of trends and innovations in art and design education - or equivalent insight gained through leadership in creative industries - required. Demonstrated record of academic teaching, creative practice, scholarly activity, professional service, and the leadership skills necessary to promote these qualities among faculty required. Ability to work collaboratively and build consensus with diverse internal and external stakeholders required. Strong problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated track record of proactively identifying and addressing needs, required. Strong organizational and time management skills required to ensure that critical deadlines and milestones are met. Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required. Proven success in building partnerships across departments and with external organizations to advance academic initiatives and community engagement required. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work required. Evidence of bringing expertise of professional practice in support of teaching preferred. Evidence of cultivating and leveraging professional networks in art, design, and related creative industries that informs and advances teaching and program development preferred. Record of creating co-curricular and extra-curricular experiences for students preferred. Artistic ability and professional artistic experience preferred. Ability to foster strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, industry partners, and community partners required. Business Hours:
Regular business hours for the College are Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Regular hours may vary based on the College's needs and type of position. Weekend and evening hours may be required. Travel may be required.
Classification and Status:
This is an exempt position. This is a regular, full-time position. This is a benefits-eligible position.
Anticipated Hiring Range:
$126,910 - $135,000 per year The posted salary range reflects the College's anticipated hiring salary range, but the final salary range is subject to negotiation and additional factors, such as the candidate's background, experience, and alignment with institutional needs.
Background Check:
This individual will be required to undergo a job-related background check, inclusive of employment and education verification. Some positions may require successful completion of a post-offer agility test. Employment is contingent on satisfactory results of the aforementioned, in addition to compliance with requirements cited in this job description.
