Job Description

This is a 100% Contract position for 1 year with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career status. Position will remain posted until a suitable candidate has been identified. Post with "Priority consideration will be given to applications received by 6/29/2026 DESCRIPTION The Natural Reserve System (NRS) Outreach Coordinator reports to the NRS Executive Director and is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive outreach program that leverages the four UC San Diego Natural Reserves to expand public access through guided tours, community-science workshops, and a tide-pool docent initiative.
The incumbent will:
  • Develop curriculum-aligned field trips and author a field guide with site-specific educational modules that support K-12 and community-college educators.
  • Formalize a "Reserve Ambassadors" volunteer program to sustain long-term stewardship and recruit regular tide-pool docents who promote responsible ecosystem interaction.
  • Forge strategic partnerships with local schools, community colleges, and community organizations to establish recurring visit schedules and integrate the reserves into existing educational pathways.
  • Coordinate BioBlitz events that generate new species observations for contribution to statewide biodiversity databases.
  • Amplify the reserves' digital footprint by managing coordinated social-media campaigns and community-newsletter outreach.
Uses professional public educational program concepts in the completion of public education assignments. Works on programs and needs assessments that are of moderate scope and complexity. Modifies existing public educational programs or develops segments of larger programs. ~Submission of a cover letter for a complete application is strongly encouraged.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area such as Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Natural Resource Management and / or equivalent experience / training. Working knowledge of departmental and organization policies and procedures; knowledge of educational program content and objectives. Working knowledge of delivering public educational programs. Working knowledge of current public education programs and trends. Working skills to produce and deliver programs. Working knowledge of conducting needs assessment. Good analytical skills to understand how business needs can be addressed through the design and delivery of training programs. Good reading, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and good presentation skills. Ability to work successfully with internal and external groups. Effective written and verbal communications skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals at various organizational levels. Ability to work independently and/or with a greater team. Knowledge of local ecosystems. Solid knowledge of common computer application programs. Competency in use of typical business software: word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation applications. Interest and ability to work effectively with diverse communities, including Indigenous groups. Experience with volunteer management, including scheduling, motivating, recruitment and retention. Proficiency in community/citizen science tools and social media.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
This position may be eligible for a Hybrid flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time. Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results. Must have access to reliable transportation. Work on evenings and weekends may be required. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range:
$55,400 - $93,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent:
$26.53 - $44.92 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
