Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Residential Education, the Assistant Director of Community Standards provides strategic leadership, oversight, and administration of the college's residential student conduct program to ensure fair, equitable, and legally compliant resolution of alleged policy violations. The position also ensures a high quality residential program through staff selection and standards oversight. The position ensures alignment with college mission, the Great Commitments, federal and state regulatory requirements, and best practices in higher education student conduct administration. The Assistant Director oversees all residential and campus-wide student conduct processes, resolution operations, manages data management systems, and educational initiatives that promote accountability, student development, and community well-being. The Assistant Director serves as an integral member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and Care Team, and as a key advisor on behavioral risks, compliance, and trends in student accountability. Following long-standing tradition and practice at Berea College, this position includes responsibility for supervising, mentoring, and developing students in the College's integrated Work College Program. This supports student learning, career readiness, and the program's learning goals and outcomes. The Work College Program provides a developmental framework that guides student learning while creating a structured mentorship opportunity, with role-specific training that equips faculty and staff mentors to support student development. Faculty and staff mentors play an essential part in helping students connect their work-learning-service experiences with broader academic, professional, and personal development. For faculty, this aligns with Berea's tenure and promotion criteria. Student Conduct Administration & Case Management (30%)
  • Serve as the chief conduct officer for Berea College's residential student population.
  • Coordinate efforts with student conduct officers, resolution boards, and Public Safety to investigate, facilitate, and resolve cases involving alleged violations of college policy.
  • Oversee, coordinate, and ensure the investigation of reports and complaints of alleged violations of college policy are timely, confidential, and impartial.
  • Responsible for the incident reporting system, Maxient, and manages all electronic student conduct records.
  • Reviews and evaluates residential incident reports, ensuring consistency, fairness, and compliance with institutional policies.
  • Facilitates and supports resolution boards in case management, investigations, and decision-making to promote educational outcomes and accountability.
  • Facilitates the spectrum of resolution options, including conflict mediation, shuttle diplomacy, and restorative justice practices, to foster a holistic response to harm and conflict.
  • Master subject matter related to the Student Handbook and institutional case history. Resident Advisor (RA) Oversight & Eligibility Management (20%)
  • Provide oversight of the Resident Advisor (RA) selection and eligibility process, including chairing the RA hiring committee and ensuring an equitable, consistent, and mission-aligned selection experience.
  • Manage and monitor ongoing RA eligibility requirements, including GPA verification, conduct standing, and performance benchmarks, in collaboration with campus partners.
  • Coordinates and implements regular eligibility checks for Residence Life staff (academic, conduct, and job performance) and communicate status updates or concerns to appropriate supervisors.
  • Serve as the central point of contact for RA eligibility decisions, including determining continuation, probationary status, or removal in partnership with Residence Life leadership. Administrative, On-Call & Additional Responsibilities (15%)
  • Participates in the Student Affairs professional on-call rotation.
  • Provides support for Residence Education, Student Affairs, and divisional initiatives as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean/Director of Residential Education, Associate Vice President, or Vice President of Student Affairs. Education, Training & Student Development (15%)
  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and facilitate educational programs and initiatives designed to educate and support faculty, staff, and students regarding their rights and responsibilities, including reporting options, wraparound student support services, college policy, and applicable grievance procedures, confidential resources, etc.
  • Supports student learning and development through restorative practices and educational measures.
  • Assists in the development and revision of residential policies, procedures, manuals, educational materials, and training resources for Residential Education. Collaboration, Communication & Institutional Engagement (10%)
  • Collaborate with college leadership and colleagues to disseminate information, redesign processes, and support investigative processes. Collaborate and coordinate with compliance partners across the institution to support the College's overlapping compliance needs and responsibilities.
  • Serves as a liaison between students, faculty, and staff. Facilitates communication and understanding throughout the student conduct process to all parties involved.
  • Present student conduct information to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the Board of Trustees, as requested or required. Student Supervision & Labor Program (10%)
  • Serves as the primary Labor Supervisor for the Berea Restorative Justice Collective (BRJC) in conjunction with the Peace & Social Justice academic program.
Education required to ensure success in this position: Master's degree in education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Human Development, or related field required. Experience required to ensure success in this position: 3-5 years of professional experience in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Student Conduct, or a related functional area. Demonstrated experience conducting student conduct investigations, hearings, and/or administrative adjudications. Demonstrated experience supporting, training, educating, and serving diverse populations. Proven supervisory experience, including paraprofessional staff support, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Previous experience leading or serving on a Behavioral Intervention, CARE, or Threat Assessment Teams Ability to adapt to change and assume varied responsibilities in a dynamic environment. Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Advanced knowledge of professional standards, best practices, and regulatory compliance for student conduct. Ability to interpret, implement, and ensure consistent application of residential college policies. Experience leading student conduct processes, including investigations, hearings, documentation, and crisis response, exercising sound judgment and procedural integrity. Capacity to develop, revise, and maintain policies, procedures, manuals, and guidance documents aligned with institutional priorities. Collaborative approach to policy compliance, development, and effective communication with students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge, skills, or training in Restorative Justice, restorative practices, or conflict mediation preferred. License, certification, or registration necessary: Valid driver's license Clery Act, Student Conduct, and Title IX certification or training is strongly preferred Physical requirements: Must have visual acuity to perform activities such as inspections or preparing and analyzing data and figures. Must be physically able to navigate campus, as well as sit, or stand for extended periods of time.
