Job Description

1. Student/Community Development/Conduct. Providing oversight and leadership in the Residence halls to create and maintain a living and learning environment that applies student development theory to support the mission of Winona State University and the Housing & Residence Life Department. Advise and counsel students regarding academic, personal ,and mental health issues. Develop working knowledge of campus and community resources and refer when necessary. Mediate individual and group conflicts. Manage conduct process for all cases in assigned building(s) and sometimes taking other cases when directed. Serve as a hearing officer for conduct cases implementing appropriate WSU and MinnState Regulations, Policies, and Procedures and sanctioning students for violations in an informed, developmental, and educational manner. Ensure accuracy of conduct records in Maxient software as well as timely processing of cases. Develop students' leadership skills by advising the Hall Council, providing staff development and supporting other residence hall organizations. Assist in the development and implementation of intentional departmental community development model that emphasizes the first six weeks, intentional conversations, residence hall-wide programming initiatives, first-year student success, academics, and inclusive community programming. Serve as educator, consultant, and general resource for students and staff. Maintain communication with parents, faculty, staff, and other administrative personnel as appropriate and necessary. 2. Supervision. Selection, training, supervision and evaluation of staff. Directly supervise and evaluate Assistant Hall Director, Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants. Hold regular and intentional one-on-one meetings, discussing performance concerns, coaching, personal development planning, etc. Facilitate regular staff meetings in the residence hall. Participate and present training topics in fall training and in-service training for Assistant Hall Directors, Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants. Serve as a resource on university and departmental policies and procedures. Coordinate on-call system for the Resident Assistant staff. 3. Administrative Responsibilities. Maintain and improve the physical environment of the residence hall in conjunction with the Director(s) of Housing and Residence Life and facilities services. Issue and control all keys. Ensure all safety, security and maintenance needs are reported to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Assist in developing renovation/inventory replacement priorities. Oversee and ensure accurate StarRez records for residence hall front desk operations including mail, packages, lofts, resources, and access cards. Manage and ensure accuracy of all administrative functions through the StarRez management software. These include room assignments, no-shows, room changes, inventory, damage billing, academic break housing, and interim housing. Work with Webbrix software to troubleshoot door access issues and exception lists. Implement and direct hall opening and closing activities. Maintain files and prepare required reports in a manner that complies with
FERPA & MN
Data Practices Act. Essential personnel during weather emergencies. 4. Departmental Responsibilities. Participate in the Department's on-call rotation to provide support for residence hall staff and to respond to emergencies and crises. Coordinate assigned department-wide committees and functions. Such responsibilities could include managing our staff hiring process, training activities and scheduling, advising the National Residence Hall Honorary, working with assessment and survey efforts, departmental programming and other initiatives or developing educational social media campaigns. Work with our Assistant Director to provide summer conference management and support for summer campers and guests. Represent the Housing & Residence Life Department through presentations, tours and traveling during Registration, Orientation, and Admissions events. 5. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of Winona State University. Including but not limited to representing Housing & Residence Life on divisional and university committees and participating in professional development. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree. Two (2) years of professional experience working in Housing & Residence Life or other related higher education experience. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check in accordance with the Kari Koskinen Act. Preferred Qualification Master's Degree in Higher education, student development or related field. Knowledge of residence hall operations and functions. Demonstrated skills in leadership, supervision, group facilitation, advising, training, programming, community development, and budget management. Understanding of and ability to apply basics of student development theory. Knowledge of conduct process and management, student due process and university judicial policies. Knowledge of StarRez housing management system and ability to carry out the following administrative functions: occupancy management, key/inventory management, and billing. Ability to perform well under pressure, relate positively to people, and to motivate others and function as a fully participative team member. Organization and time management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines, delegate effectively, and orchestrate projects. Excellent interpersonal communication skills in interacting effectively with a diverse audience.

This also includes conflict mediation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, which allow for reports, presentations and training assignments. Proficiency in operating computers and using word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

Ability to learn new software as needed.
