The Director contributes to theFOCUS URI
Strategic Plan by providing leadership, expertise, and assessment of undergraduate advising within a mixed advising model that includes both professional and faculty advisors. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the advising enterprise, the Director coordinates advising efforts with stakeholders across degree-granting colleges and key campus partners (e.g., Fannon Institute for Student Success, Enrollment Services, New Student Transitions, Disability, Access, and Inclusion) to ensure comprehensive support for students. As a key member of the university-wide advising leadership team (Advising Council), the Director leads short-term, cross-college initiatives focused on the development and implementation of advising strategies. The role also emphasizes the integration of best practices and current research in student retention and persistence to enhance advising effectiveness. Duties and ResponsibilitiesKEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recognizing the University is moving to a mixed method of advising, develop, direct, and implement the strategic plan for university wide academic advising, which is aligned within the Degree Colleges, Academic Affairs, and the University strategic plans related to academic advising, degree planning, and student success.
- As the University transitions to an enhanced method of undergraduate advising, support degree granting colleges in their advising models that connect to the overall goals, systems, and operations of the University.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and expert for those who supervise academic advisors within the degree colleges. Provide the faculty senate advising committee information and data when requested.
- Ensure the strategic use of technology and delivery of advising practices. Work collaboratively with the Coordinator for Retention Programs to onboard advisors on the student success platforms. Work with degree-granting college colleagues to ensure that advisors and students are connected via technology platforms.
- Contribute to student success, retention, and persistence goals by utilizing and recommending best-practices and current research related to student success.
- Manage the coordination of and day-to-day operation of advising and registration components of Orientation in collaboration with New Student Transitions (NST), First Year Experience (FYE), and degree colleges, including the arrangement and contracting of additional faculty/staff, logistics, etc.
- Identify advising resources to support advisors in their professional development. Work with University on training and development programs on advising.
- Responsible for ensuring consistent production, collection, and reporting of data related to the assessment of advising practices, student support and satisfaction, etc. Serve on NECHE committee when requested.
- Coordinate the work of and serve as a member of the Advising Council, lead short-term teams in reviewing policy, assist in coordinating the development and implementation of advising best practices, assist in the development and delivery of various university wide advisor training and professional development efforts.
- Assist in the creation, production, and maintenance of any centralized print and electronic materials for academic advising, including websites.
- Address inconsistencies in advising practices and work with departments to create clear and consistent guidelines for advisors to reduce barriers for students. Communicate continuously with the colleges and their advising teams.
- Responsible for sharing important announcements impacting advising practices.
- Represent the advising unit on various university and college committees and work groups.
- Participate in college wide recruitment activities and events.

1. Earned master's degree. 2. Minimum of five years of experience serving in an undergraduate advising capacity in higher education. 3. Experience working with national best practices and research related to student success, academic advising, and retention. 4. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and other campus stakeholders. 5. Experience with advising technology/systems that support student success. 6. Supervisory skills. 7. Ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, rules, operations, and objectives and communicate the interpretation to others. 8. Ability to manage complex projects and systems. 9. Commitment to equitable advising practices. 10. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. 11. Proficiency in written communication skills. 12. Ability to work with diverse groups/populations. Preferred QualificationsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. PhD or equivalent in higher education or related field. 2. Progressive experience in academic advising. 3. Conflict resolution skills. 4. Advisor training experience. 5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex academic environment with minimal supervision. 6.
