Job Description

AFRICAN FAMILY HEALTH ORGANIZATION
(AFAHO)
MISSION AFAHO
provides health, human and educational services and programs to the African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee communities in the greater Philadelphia area.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
AFAHO's Education Programs includes the African Youth Empowerment Program (AYEP), an after-school and summer program and the Adult Education Program (English As a Second Language and Basic Literacy). The organization is in search of a multi-tasking, well-organized, creative individual to assist with the planning, implementation and coordination of these programs. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated team player who is passionate about improving educational outcomes and self-sufficiency status of greater Philadelphia's African and Caribbean immigrant youth and adult learners. This person will have the ability to thrive in a dynamic and demanding work environment and will be expected to handle sensitive and confidential client information and situations with integrity and professionalism.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Coordination
  • Assist with the planning, implementation and evaluation of robust and engaging youth development and adult learning programs.
  • Develop and maintain program schedules and curriculum aligned with educational and developmental goals.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and recommend improvements using data, assessments, and participant feedback.
  • Coordinate program logistics (location, materials, speakers, resources, partners, sponsors, supplies etc).
  • Build and maintain partnerships with local organizations, businesses, institutions, schools and other relevant partners.
  • Coordinate Summer Camp Activities, including staff, intern, partner and volunteer roles.
  • Maintain contact with youth and families to ensure they are well informed of program events and activities.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of special programs and events.
  • Organize and submit program receipts and invoices including contractor invoices.
  • Represent education programs at external public, partner and funder meetings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with families and participants.
  • Volunteer recruitment and coordination.
  • Attend outreach events and recruit youth and/or adult learners for program participation. College Prep
  • Develop a Robust College Preparation Program to assist youth through the process.
  • Attend meetings with partners to connect youth/adult learners to colleges, universities and trade schools.
  • Assist students with FAFSA applications.
  • Organize field trips to college campuses.
  • Determine structure for maintaining contact with graduates.
  • Research scholarships and connect youth and adult learners to post-secondary opportunities.
  • Work closely with school counselors to ensure seniors are in good standing for graduation. Data management
  • Maintain program spreadsheets and ensure accurate documentation of program activities.
  • Assist with gathering information for reports to funders.
  • Ensure all program participants are registered accurately and keep Apricot and registration systems updated. Qualifications
  • BA or BS degree in Education, Social Work, Human Services or related field required.
  • 2 or more years of related programmatic and administrative support experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, decision making and time management skills.
  • Creative and innovative
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve creatively and complete tasks thoroughly without oversight
  • Strong technical skills
  • Must be grounded and organized and yet flexible and open to the changing demands of a small organization.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Willing to step into tasks as needed and requested by AFAHO management.

Although work is primarily indoors, you will be required to travel outside to client and community locations. Travel in and around AFAHO's service delivery area to support delivery of services to clients. Position may require occasional trips to attend conferences, seminars, and meetings. Certain visits or work-related appointments might be scheduled outside of traditional work hours as necessary.
