Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Dean of Students is a unit in Student Affairs with a mission to provide support and assistance to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community focused on empowering students, to succeed in navigating the University environment. Position Summary- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
- The Assistant Dean of Students for Case Management is an integral member of the Student Care and Case Management area of the Dean of Students (DOS) team.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and effectiveness in cultivating care for students, instructors, staff, and community partners who reflect the varied identities that exist in the university environment.
- Experience effectively assisting and/or supporting a large and diverse case load of individuals who are involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, and other disruptive/disturbing life events (e.g., 1-1 meetings, making referrals, service coordination) with great care and sensitivity.
- Knowledge of current research, trends, and best practices related to non-clinical case management programs and services.
- Experience developing, implementing, and assessing effective programs and services.
- Experience working autonomously and as an effective member of a collaborative, and fast-paced team.
- Experience effectively prioritizing and navigating complex emergent situations and adapting easily to changing priorities based on emergent needs.
- Experience managing confidential and sensitive information and situations with diplomacy and demonstration of excellent critical thinking and sound judgement.
- Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations.
- Understanding of the environment and culture of a highly selective, competitive research University with the ability to work collaboratively with on and off-campus partners, including faculty.
- Availability/flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
- Valid NC Driver's License or eligibility to hold a valid NC Driver's License.
- Direct professional experience in non-clinical case management in a post-secondary, higher education setting.
- Demonstrated experience and skills in implementing effective programs, services, and systems that assist and/or support a large and diverse caseload individuals who are involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, or other disruptive/disturbing life events with great care and sensitivity; 24 hour on-call experience is notable.
- Experience participating as a member of multi-disciplinary crisis, care, and/or behavior intervention teams.
- Excellent communicator (written and verbal) with experience delivering information to diverse constituencies in individual, as well as small and large group settings using multiple formats (e.g., in-person, telephone, virtual/video).
- Knowledge of and applied experience related to non-clinical case management, student development, adult learners, first generation college students, transfer students, and/or crisis response
- Experience building and sustaining relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents / families, and community partners to address a wide array of situations and needs.
- Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations, specifically FERPA, Title IX, HIPPA, Clery, VAWA, and others that are similar and to higher education.
- Knowledge and experience maximizing the use of non-clinical case management software; experience with Advocate by Symplicity is a plus.
- Experience developing and implementing operational and service-based assessments/evaluations and using data to inform practice and/or policy. Special Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to drive a state-owned vehicle on a limited basis, as directed by the supervisor.
