This individual is committed to the school's mission and strategic plan and brings enthusiasm to both teaching Physical Education (PE) classes—promoting physical literacy, teamwork, and wellness—and leading developmentally appropriate, curriculum‑based, experiential Outdoor Education (OE) activities and trips. This is a full‑time hybrid position that intentionally combines responsibilities as a Physical Education Instructor and an Outdoor Educator. The role and schedule are designed to support both the PE and OE programs. Responsibilities are divided between teaching PE classes and delivering high‑quality, outdoor education experiences based on seasonal and program needs. Supervisory Relationship Effective collaboration across departments is essential for success in this role. In the PE Instructor role, the individual reports to the Athletic Director and works collaboratively with all of the PE instructors on staff. In the Outdoor Educator role, the individual reports to the Director of Outdoor Education and works collaboratively with the Outdoor Education Trip Coordinator, Outdoor Education Gear Manager, and Outdoor Education Provisions Manager. Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree required. Desired fields of study include science, adventure education, physical education, recreation administration, natural history, or related technical fields. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Knowledge of and insight into the principles of child development and learning. Knowledge of and insight into the principles of child development as related to fitness training principles and methodologies. Certification as Wilderness First Responder (WFR) required. Must immediately pursue WFR certification if not already in place.
Physical abilities required:
o Maintain an appropriate level of physical fitness to carry out assigned outdoor activities. o Ability to lift, carry, and manipulate tools and equipment necessary to set up and facilitate activities. o Must be able to lift and/or carry light to medium (10-75 pounds) weights. o Climbing and hiking in excess of five miles in a day in all weather conditions are essential elements of the workplace. o Work may include, but is not limited to, weekend and evening hours, extended hours in an outdoor setting, routine exposure to the elements, lifting, climbing, rappelling, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, caving, and driving a vehicle. Fluency in Spanish is beneficial but not required. Strong, positive references that support professionalism and work ethic. Active and practicing Christian requirement; willing to sign Affirmation of Faith. Skills Capability to work independently and collaboratively. Communicate effectively across departments to ensure alignment of schedules, expectations, and objectives. Skill to interpret and convey ideas, policies, information, and feelings professionally, factually, and effectively in written and oral communication with various constituencies of the school. Capacity to recognize the need to adjust or change and to collaborate through the management of that change. Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly the ability to work with multiple constituencies across communication platforms. Demonstrate ability to take initiative in a team-based environment, follow through on independent projects, and balance multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail. Strong organizational skills with the ability to work well under schedules and deadlines. Ability to manage competing priorities across a hybrid role. Responsibilities Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability across both Physical Education and Outdoor Education roles. Participate in meetings, training, and professional development related to athletics and outdoor education. Deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate Physical Education instruction aligned with school standards and athletic philosophy. Support the development of physical literacy, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness. Assist with the planning and implementation of Physical Education curriculum and activities. Collaborate with the Athletic Director and athletics staff to support student development. Plan, manage, and deliver outdoor education trips, ensuring all logistical, administrative, and risk‑management requirements are met. Assist with planning and implementing the outdoor education rucking curriculum. Support risk management practices, safety protocols, and Leave No Trace principles across all programs. Foster student growth through experiential learning, leadership development, and meaningful connection to the natural world. Maintain a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment. Uphold school policies and expectations related to athletics, outdoor education, and student conduct. Maintain clear and timely communication to support and strengthen family connections. Engage in mentorship and feedback processes as an essential component of ongoing professional growth, including participation in ongoing mentorship with the OE Core Leadership Team. Collaborate closely with the Outdoor Education Coordinator on program design, logistics, and curriculum alignment. Work with the Outdoor Education Gear Manager to ensure appropriate selection, care, and use of equipment. Coordinate with the Outdoor Education Provisions Manager regarding food planning, supplies, and trip logistics. Work conscientiously with the School Health Office to ensure trip Leadership Teams are informed of and prepared to manage students' medical, physical, and social‑emotional needs as communicated by families, supporting safety, risk mitigation, and appropriate care. Collaborate with Lower and Middle School Division Heads to develop and implement school and community volunteer partnership opportunities that support the outdoor education program and communicate these opportunities to families and community members. Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Technology to ensure the school website accurately reflects current, clear, and mission‑aligned information about the Outdoor Education program. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School. Salary and Employment Benefits Salary commensurate with experience and education.
