Summary:
The Specialized Programs Coordinator is responsible for the coordination/training/support of our specialized programs designed to address the needs of students with significant disabilities who are educated within and/or outside of the general education classroom. The Specialized Programs Coordinator will advise school and special education leadership about special education programs to ensure that the needs of all students are being met. The Specialized Programs Coordinator will focus on helping children with disabilities to maximize their learning in an inclusive setting and starting innovative new school programs aimed towards the implementation of specialized supports. The Specialized Programs Coordinator shall ensure the quality and integrity of all aspects of the programs.
Essential Duties:
Using their strong decision-making, public relations, interpersonal, and communication skills, the Specialized Programs Coordinator is responsible for collaborating with staff members and teachers from various departments to plan short or long-term special services for children with significant needs. Coordinating the adaptive curriculum, to include training teaching staff, monitoring the progress of students and implementing new programs to address the needs of students and staff. Oversees the implementation of Virginia Alternative Assessment Program to include but not limited to the training of staff. Establishes and maintains communication with parents of students in the program. Supports the planning and implementation of special education initiatives. Integrates new developments, research findings, and best practices into ongoing programs and new initiatives. Collaborates with VCU ACE regarding training updates for staff supporting students with significant needs. Coordinate the coaching of teachers of students with autism, significant needs, and/or functional academic needs in the implementation of Evidence Based Practices in their classrooms. Develop a system of support for special and general education teachers in the use of these practices.
Qualifications:
Postgraduate Professional Certificate. Minimum of three years' experience teaching in special education. Supervisory experience preferred, but not required. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, practices, procedures, programs, regulations and policies of special education. Candidates must be knowledgeable of best practice in autism, VAAP testing, teaching methodology, behavior management of students with disabilities, and the general education curriculum for students, ages 2-21. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships within the school and community. Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and representatives of other agencies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to function effectively as a team member in determining appropriate services for the children through such meetings as eligibility meetings, triennials, and IEPs. Ability to assist special education teachers in the implementation of technology in the educational environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must demonstrate qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with pupils, teachers and parents. Candidates must be able to organize and present workshops on various topics related to the provision of special education and specialized services for specialized programs instructional staff. Candidates should be skilled in the use of word processing, database, and presentation software. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties are typically performed in school settings including offices, conference centers, and classrooms. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 20 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds. Other limited physical activities are required. Frequent operation of a vehicle and office equipment is required. Regular and frequent contact is made at all organizational levels for the purpose of developing and achieving organizational goals and missions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work. Regular contact with students with special needs is a requirement. Contact with building administrators, staff members, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents and staff by phone and in person may be necessary.
Pay Rate:
The salary range is $92,644-$152,559

Full time / 12 months / 245 days
