Job Description

Head Resident - Temporary Part time
BASIC FUNCTION
The Head Resident participates in the professional on call duty rotation. The Head Resident will be responsible for covering duty one night per week and one weekend per month. The Head Resident is responsible for all duties necessary for administration of the residence halls as part of the academic system and appropriate to the educational philosophy of Vermont State University and the Office of Residential Life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Administrative Functions:
Attend staff meetings and training workshops as scheduled by the Office of Residential Life. Issue building keys as needed while on duty. Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
Educational Functions:
Create a hall environment consistent with the academic and developmental purposes of the University. Serve as resource person for students needing information and support. Attend hall programs and activities that are educational and social while on duty. Participate in on call duty rotation (experience and time dependent.) Perform other educational duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direct supervision is received from the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A
bachelor's degree with previous experience working in a residential environment or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge :
Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting. Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.
Skills :
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Able to meet students where they are, ensure they feel listened to, and that they are comfortable working with a staff member to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up. Strong problem-solving skills.
Abilities :
Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success. Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and advocacy aspects of the job. Ability to work weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.
Location:
VTSU Lyndon Campus, Lyndon, Vermont Compensation:
Bi-weekly stipend of $1,250.00 plus housing and a meal plan through Sodexo during the academic year. Total stipend for the academic year would be $5,000 if full academic year is worked.
