Job Description

As a Spokane Public Schools staff member, you'll uphold our commitment to creating a loving and collaborative learning community where all students belong and thrive. The Dean of Students (DoS) is a school-based administrative leader who shares responsibility with the principal for student culture, behavior systems, classroom instruction, and daily school operations in support of safe, inclusive, and high-functioning learning environments. The DoS provides leadership in the implementation of schoolwide frameworks, including PBIS and MTSS, to promote positive behavior, equitable access to learning, and student success. The Dean of Students is a salaried administrative position and is expected to work a schedule aligned with the building principal, including hours beyond the student school day and teacher contract time as required to fulfill leadership responsibilities. The annual work calendar consists of 200 workdays, beginning in early August and concluding shortly after the final student instructional day, in accordance with the district academic calendar. This schedule enables full participation in district-level leadership meetings, professional learning, and school-year planning and closure activities. The Dean of Students is a core member of the school's administrative leadership team and participates in leadership decision-making, problem-solving, and implementation of schoolwide initiatives. The DoS works in close partnership with the principal and other administrators to ensure continuity of leadership, consistent expectations, and coordinated support for students, staff, and families.

FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Presence & School Climate Maintain a visible, proactive administrative presence during instructional and non-instructional times, including arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, and school events. Support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of schoolwide culture and behavior systems aligned to PBIS and MTSS, ensuring safety, equity, and inclusion. Monitor and ensure consistent implementation of schoolwide expectations, procedures, and restorative practices that promote accountability, belonging, and positive student behavior. Engage proactively with students, families, and staff to build trust, address concerns, and strengthen school-community relationships. Instructional Leadership Support the principal in leading the instructional program, including supervision, support, and evaluation of assigned staff as delegated. Collaborate with the leadership team to align behavior systems, operational structures, and school climate practices with instructional priorities and student learning goals. Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of school improvement goals and action plans, with emphasis on equitable outcomes and MTSS alignment. Lead and support data-informed decision-making by analyzing school-level data related to achievement, attendance, behavior, and engagement, and coordinating responsive tiered supports within MTSS. Contribute to the planning and facilitation of professional learning that strengthens instructional practice, cultural responsiveness, and effective implementation of MTSS and PBIS. Assist in interpreting and implementing board policies, administrative regulations, and district initiatives related to instruction, assessment, student support, and school improvement. Participate in district leadership meetings, professional learning, and planning activities, including preparation for the opening and closing of the school year. Student Culture, Behavior, and Support Systems Serve as the lead administrator, as assigned, for student discipline, attendance, and conduct interventions, ensuring consistent application of district policies and PBIS expectations. Partner with teachers, counselors, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other support staff to coordinate academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions aligned to MTSS tiers. Support the development and implementation of crisis response, safety, and supervision plans that protect student well-being and ensure a secure learning environment. Administrative & Operational Leadership Support the effective daily operation of the school, including schedules, supervision systems, safety procedures, and logistical coordination. Collaborate in the recruitment, selection, orientation, supervision, and support of staff, with attention to equity, cultural responsiveness, and district priorities. Assist in the management of school resources, including budget development, fiscal oversight, facilities, grounds, equipment, reporting, and documentation. Perform administrative duties of the principal when delegated or in the principal's absence to ensure continuity of leadership and school operations. Valid Washington State Administrative Certification If hired without certification, applicant must be currently enrolled in an administrative program and on track to be completed within the first year in this DoS role. Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience. Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional practices, assessment, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Demonstrated experience in school or related instructional leadership, including the development and implementation of schoolwide student culture, discipline, and attendance systems that emphasize positive, preventative, restorative, and equitable practices. Demonstrated ability to analyze multiple data sources and use data to support sound decision-making related to student achievement, attendance, engagement, and school improvement. Demonstrated understanding of organizational change processes and current trends in K-12 education. Experience in planning, scheduling, and allocating human, fiscal, and material resources; making informed decisions using appropriate decision-making processes; and accepting responsibility for actions and outcomes. Knowledge of school budgeting and the management of fiscal resources. Knowledge of teacher evaluation systems and demonstrated ability to apply evaluation processes in K-12 public school settings. Demonstrated ability to foster a results-oriented environment that motivates, develops, and supports a diverse staff; encourages collaboration; and promotes continuous improvement. Demonstrated commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive practices, including the ability to establish positive and respectful relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. Demonstrated knowledge of or experience implementing MTSS and PBIS frameworks to support student behavior, engagement, and academic success. Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication, including the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with diverse audiences. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer and information technologies to support organization, communication, and productivity. Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, and collaborative skills, including the ability to work effectively as a member of a leadership team. Demonstrated commitment to professional learning and growth, including the ability to provide and receive feedback in support of high standards for personal and organizational performance. Demonstrated strong work ethic and willingness to work flexible hours aligned to the responsibilities of school leadership, as required to accomplish assigned duties and meet the needs of the school community.
