SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHER
Under the principal's direction, and as part of a secondary teaching assignment, the Social Science Teacher teaches one or more classes of social studies and assists in other school programs as assigned. The teacher develops in each pupil an appreciation of American ideals and cultural heritage; develops proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to motivate each pupil to understand and exercise his/her rights, privileges and responsibilities as a citizen; to develop understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural and political factors which influence the development of work regions; to encourage pupils to develop sound opinions based on study of facts concerning operation of political and economic systems; to develop good relationships with parents and with other staff members. I.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Performs duties in accordance with District and State school policies and\or laws. b. Teaches courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science or humanities and driver's education to secondary pupils utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities. c. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in State law and administrative regulation and procedures of the School District. d. Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time and other appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry. e. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual abilities and cultural backgrounds. f. Develop knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American governmental and economic system and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. g. Makes material from current magazines, newspapers, television programs, etc., available to pupils; plans and guides discussions of current social, environment and history of area being studied. h. Develops an understanding of the contributions of minority, racial, religious, and political groups to American culture and the role of minorities in our present day world. i. Develops knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence in personal freedom, education and living standards of the people in those nations. j. Encourages pupils to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, national, and world problems. k. Establishes and maintains standards of pupils behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. l. Creates, with assistance of pupils, interest centers and displays with material to enhance learning. m. Evaluates each pupil's development in course being taught and prepares progress reports. n. Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education activities. o. Participates with the principal or his\her designee to mutually develop the system by which he\she will be evaluated in conformance with the District's uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessments. II.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aides and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records; may request resource speakers and field trips. b. Communicates with parents and school personnel to discuss the individual pupil's progress. c. Identifies pupil's needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems. d. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. e. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school or assignment and\or on a District level. May teach under the module or flexible scheduling plan. f. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required. g. Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistant's and\or other paraprofessionals. h. Attends all faculty, in-service, and articulation meetings. i. Performs other duties, such as, yard and bus duties as assigned by the school's extra duty roster. j. Supervises co-curricular activities, such as, students' supervision at athletic events, club sponsorships and dance duties as assigned. k. Assist in writing goals and performance objectives in his teaching assignment and relevant school and District levels as assigned. Requirements /
