Per course adjunct faculty for the Single Subject Teaching Credential program's course, SSTE 554-02 Founded in 1863, Saint Mary's is a residential campus nestled 20 miles east of San Francisco in the picturesque Moraga Valley. 02- Foundations of Adolescent Literacy (3 Units)Moraga Campus:

45pm - 7:30pm on campus August 31-December 18, 2026 This course will explore Adolescent Literacy through the lens of secondary curriculum. We will specifically address the integration of reading and writing across content areas, academic language, vocabulary instruction, comprehension strategies, and digital literacy. We will explore how various disabilities (e.g. dyslexia,....) can impact literacy instruction and explore ways to meet the needs of these students. We will address the literacy needs of English Language Learners, speakers of non-dominant varieties of English, students with disabilities and youth who are developing 21st century literacy skills. We will specifically look at ways to develop students' capacities as effective readers, writers, listeners and speakers through asset based pedagogies Instructors are sought with teaching experience in the Social Sciences, Math, Art and PE, among others. Selected instructors will work closely with the faculty teaching the general methods portions of the course.Requirements to teach this course:
At least four years experience teaching in a Title I secondary public school with majority students of color within the past 10 years. Subject area of expertise/credential should be specified in the resum. Experience teaching and utilizing the latest research-based strategies in critical pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and/or funds of knowledge/community cultural wealth. Effectively uses multiple pedagogical strategies including: community building activities; Socratic Seminars; heterogeneous groupwork. Does not rely only on lecture and discussion-based teaching techniques in 50% of teaching Has used alternative forms of assessment (performance, presentation, and/or multimodal) with secondary students and can guide teacher candidates in the development and use of standards-based assessments.
