Job Description
Honokaa Elementary is looking for a dynamic, community-minded educator to lead a 5th-grade classroom. As our students prepare for the transition to middle school, we need a teacher who can balance rigorous academic instruction with the social-emotional support necessary for this pivotal year. The ideal candidate will embrace the unique spirit of the Hamakua Coast, integrating local culture and place-based learning into a standards-aligned curriculum.
Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership:
Plan and deliver engaging lessons in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies based on Hawaii Common Core Standards.Classroom Culture:
Establish a "Kuleana-focused" environment where students feel safe, respected, and accountable for their own learning.Differentiation:
Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, and English Language Learners (ELL).Assessment:
Use formative and summative assessments to track student progress and inform instructional shifts.Community Engagement:
Maintain open lines of communication with "Ohana" through conferences, newsletters, and digital platforms.Collaboration:
Work closely with grade-level peers and school leadership to improve school-wide outcomes and participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree. If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in. Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit.
