Job Description

Educator (Seasonal) Historic London Town and Gardens is a 23-acre park featuring history and horticulture on the South River in Edgewater, Maryland. The park is owned by Anne Arundel County and managed by the London Town Foundation (dba Historic London Town and Gardens), a non-profit organization. It is our mission to inspire present and future generations to a deeper understanding of the past, the environment, and our shared humanity. Since 1993, the Foundation has been responsible for developing and conducting interpretive, recreational, and educational programs that allow visitors to learn about our historical and horticultural offerings. Historic London Town and Gardens is seeking passionate and dedicated Seasonal Educators to join our team. In this role, you will lead educational tours for approximately 4,000 students annually, providing an engaging and informative experience that integrates the rich history of the region and local ecology. As part of our commitment to educating visitors about the historical significance of the site, including its role as a port of entry for enslaved Africans and a town built on enslaved labor, educators will be expected to approach these topics with accuracy, sensitivity, and integrity.
Responsibilities:
Lead holistic programming to educate the public by embracing London Town's history and the environment with accuracy and integrity. Display an inviting and enthusiastic attitude with excellent attention to customer service. Teach school groups on topics of history and ecology. Lead demonstrations of 18th century skills in various weather conditions while wearing a period appropriate costume. Assist in monitoring, inventory and maintenance of school supplies and historic site. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Teaching experience, either formal or informal. Enthusiasm for creating interactive experiences for visitors. Interest in, and respect for, the varied histories of America with particular attention to the lives of the enslaved population, women and other lesser-known stories. Experience working with the public and speaking to people of all ages. Ability to facilitate interactive tours and activities. Knowledge or willingness to learn about colonial American history and lifeways. Knowledge or willingness to learn 18th century skills (sewing, carpentry, game play). Knowledge or willingness to learn about regional plants and animals. Excellent communication skills.
Requirements:
Ability to wear historically accurate and complete 18th century clothing for an entire workday. Ability to perform tasks while standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, walking across uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, lifting, seeing in varying light conditions, and some strenuous physical activities. Ability to work outside all day in varying weather conditions. Ability to come in daily contact with seasonal and environmental allergens, such as: pollen, dust, smoke, perfumes and mold. Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Ability to take direction. Ability to clear a background check. Complete required trainings.

Work Schedule:
This is a part-time position. Educators work on an as-needed schedule. They can expect to work most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am to 2:30pm from late March to early June and from September to late November.
