Job Description

6th Grade ELA/Social Studies Teacher Overview Oak Hill School in Eugene, Oregon, seeks a full-time 6th Grade ELA/Social Studies Teacher for the 2026-27 school year. Located on 72 beautiful, forested acres, Oak Hill School nurtures each student by cultivating a love of learning, encouraging them to think deeply and explore boldly. Through hands-on experiential learning, students discover the world around them and grow into individuals who care deeply for others. Oak Hill is a PreK-8 independent school community rooted in belonging, academic depth, and joyful discovery. The Middle School English teacher plays an essential role in bridging the transition from elementary to middle school, fostering a passion for literature, writing, and critical thinking in our middle school students. Major Responsibilities Deliver a dynamic, developmentally appropriate English and Social Studies curriculum for students, focusing on reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and research. Foster a workshop-based environment that integrates conceptual study, writing workshops, and class seminars to celebrate autonomy of thought and self-discovery. Implement a "backwards-design" approach to lesson planning, ensuring that all instructional units align with core competencies and provide a clear scope and sequence. Integrate diverse voices and global perspectives into the literary curriculum to create an inclusive learning environment where every student feels seen and valued. Create safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom spaces where middle school students feel confident taking intellectual risks and engaging in civil discourse. Provide meaningful, timely feedback that fosters a growth mindset; assess student progress regularly and differentiate instruction to meet all students. Collaborate with colleagues, particularly in the Social Studies/History department, to create interdisciplinary, humanities-centered opportunities and experiential learning projects. Participate in the life of the school, including staff meetings, professional development, and supervisory duties. Qualifications and Attributes Bachelor's degree in English, Humanities, or Social Studies (Master's degree preferred). Minimum of three years of teaching experience preferred, with a specific enthusiasm for and understanding of the developmental needs of middle school students. Strong background in literacy instruction, including proficiency in teaching the writing process, formal grammar within context, and critical analysis of literature. Knowledge of best practices in middle-level education, including differentiated instruction and proactive classroom management. Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented faculty. Positive attitude, flexibility, and a commitment to inclusive, student-centered practices.
Salary/Benefits:
Salary commensurate with years of experience.
