Rank:
Guest Faculty Tenure Information:
Non-Tenure Track Job Description Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for a half-time guest faculty position for Fall 2026, named in honor Lee MacCormick Edwards, who taught 19th century Art History at Sarah Lawrence. The candidate will teach one seminar in the social and material history of 19th century art. Topics could include art of the British Empire and transatlantic exchange, British Aestheticism/Victorian art, Impressionism, or American art, or any topic related to Euro-American art of the 19th century. This seminar would also introduce students to the rich collections of 19th-century art in NYC, so the course topic would ideally touch on area collections. (Funding is available for field trips to museums.) Sarah Lawrence is a co-educational liberal arts college with a unique pedagogy, and candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and to the development of the research, writing, and analytical skills of their students. Faculty teaching seminars (capped at 15 students) are required to meet individually with students biweekly for "conference," which entails guiding the student through a semester-long independent research project.
Application materials must include:
cover letter, CV, course descriptions for two possible seminars including what area collections the seminar will draw upon, a sample of scholarly writing, a copy of official transcripts, and two references who will be contacted for letters of recommendation upon the submission of the candidate's application. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is an in-person teaching appointment, with the expectation that the appointed individual will teach on campus for the duration of the contract period. Compensation for this position is based on teaching experience. Required Qualifications Applicants should either be ABD or hold a Ph.D. in Art History or a related interdisciplinary program and have prior teaching experience.
