ANNOUNCMENT
The Division of Humanities at Maryville College, a selective four-year liberal arts college committed to superior teaching, invites applications for a two-year, full-time Visiting Lecturer of US History position beginning in August 2026. Qualified candidates will be committed to excellence in teaching and champions of the liberal arts model of undergraduate education. Teaching responsibilities include courses in the History major (American History survey and upper-level topical courses in American history), as well as contributions to the Maryville College Core Curriculum. Scholars of American Religious History are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate will also assume responsibility for supervising undergraduate senior theses. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, evidence of ongoing professional development, and a readiness to engage in the life of the college. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position: Education and Experience required MA or PhD in History or a related field is required; ABD in the final stages of completion will also be considered. Previous teaching experience is preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Teaching and Student Learning American History survey and upper-level topical courses in American history, as well as contributions to the Maryville College Core Curriculum. Design and deliver effective learning experiences that support student success. Develop syllabi, course materials, and assessments aligned with program learning outcomes. Provide academic advising and mentorship to students. Maintain accurate records related to instruction and student progress. Curriculum Development and Academic Program Support Contribute to curriculum development and revision within the humanities program. Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Support undergraduate research and other high-impact learning practices where appropriate. Scholarship and Professional Engagement Maintain professional expertise in the discipline. Participate in scholarly, creative, or professional development activities consistent with faculty expectations for lecturer appointments. Institutional Service and Faculty Governance Participate in departmental meetings and faculty governance activities. Serve on institutional committees as appropriate. Support initiatives that advance student learning and academic excellence. Collaboration and Campus Engagement Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support student success. Participate in recruitment, program events, and community engagement activities. Contribute to a campus culture grounded in Maryville College's values of Scholarship, Respect, and Integrity. Compliance, Safety, and Institutional Responsibilities Maintain compliance with institutional policies and academic regulations. Participate in required training and professional development. Support safe and inclusive learning environments for students.
