Job Description Summary & Additional Information Organization's Summary Statement:
The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) seeks to investigate and engage with the linguistic, cultural, cinematic, and literary worlds of speakers of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, as well as questions surrounding language learning itself. SLLC offers undergraduate programs in the languages mentioned above in addition to Cinema & Media Studies and Global Cultures & Thought as well as traditional graduate programs in French, Spanish, and Second Language Acquisition and an MPS in Persian. We are also home to the Center for East Asian Studies, the Language House Living-Learning Program, the nation's only Persian Flagship program, and the Summer Institute for Arabic, Korean, and Persian. The University of Maryland College Park world language program ranks in the Top 20 Foreign Language Schools in the United States and the Best Foreign Language School in Maryland. Approximately 1,000 BA/minor/graduate students and 90 faculty, TAs, and staff are engaged in this broad range of inquiry, individuals who themselves represent languages and cultures from across the globe. Our faculty and staff are united in our commitment to preparing students, undergraduate and graduate alike, to become knowledgeable, active, critically flexible, and intellectually vibrant citizens in an increasingly interconnected world and to furthering knowledge and debate about the languages, literatures, and cultures of which it is made. The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time (40 hours) professional-track faculty position as a Lecturer in German. The successful candidate will teach an equivalent of 24 credits per year at the undergraduate level, with a focus on introductory German language courses. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include mentorship of students and service to the program. We seek candidates whose teaching and service have prepared them to contribute to the four pillars of the
ARHU Strategic Plan:
Transformative Thinking; Boundless Creativity; Expansive Empathy; and Meaningful Futures. Contributions toward those goals and values might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, or service towards building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of all individuals equitably and fairly. Lecturers who teach two or more courses per term are benefits-eligible. This search is contingent upon the availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
MA in German or related field by time of appointment.
Experience:
Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs) Native or near-native fluency in German. Native or near-native fluency in English. Knowledge of best practices in the teaching of world languages. Ability and commitment to work with a diverse student population.
Preferences:
Interest in taking an active role in program development and outreach.
