Job Description

Lecturer in German Columbia University United States, York, York 535 West 116th Street (Show on map) Apr 01, 2026 Columbia University Department of German invites applications for Lecturers in German to begin July 1, 2026. These are fixed term, full-time appointments contingent on excellent performance. Responsibilities will include teaching 2-3 German language courses per semester, depending on other responsibilities such as coordination of multiple sections of the language program, supervision and training of graduate student instructors, curriculum development, placement and proficiency testing. Appointments will be for one or three years. Applications received by May 1, 2026 will receive full consideration.
Minimum requirements:
M.A. in German language/literature/culture/second language acquisition/applied linguistics at the time of appointment (PhD preferred), native or near-native fluency in German and English, significant teaching experience of German as a second/foreign language (college level) at different levels, broad-ranging expertise in current methodologies and related research, as well as expertise in the integration of technology in the classroom. Research profile in foreign language pedagogy or teaching-oriented perspectives on literature and culture a plus.
