Position Summary:
Provides library reference assistance and academic support services to the Benedictine University Library in Lisle, IL. Participates in the library instruction program on the Lisle campus, and provides academic support for students in need of tutoring services for the Academic Support Center. This is an on-campus, in person position. The hours are 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, with occasional evening library instruction required.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Library Research Assistance - Offer chat and in person research assistance to students, faculty, and staff, utilizing online, print, or other library resources. Collaborate with library personnel to create and maintain subject-specific resource guides (e.g., Research Guides, pathfinders) for users. Implement collection development policies related to reference materials in specific subject areas. Library Instruction - Participate in the library's instructional program by designing, adapting, planning, and conducting sessions that promote information literacy skills. Develop and implement library instruction assessment guidelines in conformity with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework Standards. Work closely with faculty and the Academic Support Center to align instruction with student needs. Monitor and assess student progress through regular check-ins and feedback, developing action plans for improvement as necessary. Academic Support - Assist first and second year students in need of academic support, working alongside Academic Support Center learning specialists. Provide one-on-one and group support to address academic challenges, study strategies, time management, and organizational skills. Resource Curation and Recommendations - Curate and recommend academic resources available at the library, such as textbooks, online materials, and study aids. Support the facilitation of a integrating library and Academic Support Center services for the benefit of students. Distribute and recommend resources to students as needed. Student Success Tutors - Assist the Academic Support Center learning specialists in identifying, hiring, training, and evaluating student study skills and student success skills tutors.
Other Functions:
1. Participates in University Library and Academic Support Center staff meetings and training activities. 2. Participates in library virtual chat alongside library personnel.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field.
Experience:
Demonstrated teaching or library instruction experience required. Library experience preferred. Supervisory experience preferred, but not required.
Specific Skills:
The University Library requires the person who fills this position to possess a sincere desire to help students succeed, which requires empathy and patience. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective interaction with students, faculty, and staff. Excellent organizational and time-management abilities. Knowledge of academic resources, study strategies, and educational technologies.
Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications:
No ; Experience with Alma or other integrated library systems preferred, but not required.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Use of computer screen, phone and customer service. May require bending, or sitting for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
