Certification Required:
Wisconsin DPI Teaching Certificate:
Instructional Library Media Specialist (902) or Initial Instructional Library Media Specialist (901).
Principle Responsibilities:
These duties and responsibilities are illustrative only and may include other duties and responsibilities as appropriately assigned. Instructional Consultant Recognizes learning and informational needs of students and staff, recognizes various learning styles, learning rates and special needs. Teaches cooperatively with teachers: research, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; literature appreciation; and media production skills. Assists students and staff in locating resources independently or in groups. Provides training and support to faculty and students when new technologies/software arrives at school library media center. Advocates and promotes reading as a lifelong learning skill. Promotes Intellectual Freedom and the Library Bill of Rights. Protects each user's right to privacy and confidentiality in the school library media center. Gathers materials for units of study and works with teachers on integrating these resources. Curriculum Development Develops a broad view of the District standards and curriculum within all content areas. Collaboratively plans instructional units with teachers incorporating appropriate materials and technologies. Publicizes and disseminates information pertaining to new acquisitions that directly complement the instructional units. Administrative Develops short- and long-range goals that guide the development of the school library media center. Prepares and administers building media budgets. Understands the Wisconsin State regulation for the use of Common School Funds. Evaluates the library programs, policies and procedures to meet changing needs. Trains and directs work of media support staff and volunteers. Promotes the use of the school library media center by students and educators; publicizes programs, services and materials through parent and staff newsletters, announcements and other creative methods. Promotes reading and library use through such activities as storytelling, book talks, displays, publications and special events. Networks with other libraries to share resources and programming. Serves as an interpreter and advocate of copyright laws. Collection Development and Maintenance Selects and evaluates materials and technologies that support the District's curriculum and educational philosophy. Seeks input of staff and students regarding the selection of materials and technologies. Maintains a current, appropriate collection, withdrawing obsolete and/or damaging resources appropriately. Develops a balanced collection with diverse and global points of view. Provides a current and relevant professional development collection for faculty and staff. Professional Provides leadership in the integration of technology into all areas of the curriculum and the instructional practices of the faculty. Provides in-service training and support faculty and staff. Keeps abreast of the "latest and best" in school library media via professional organizations, workshops, training sessions, conferences, networking, and professional journals. Maintains current, in-depth knowledge of research and best practices in all aspects of the library and media field, including legislation regarding access, copyright, and other legal issues that affect the school media center. Demonstrates professional integrity through ethical behavior. Provides an inviting atmosphere that encourages students and faculty to use the school library media center. Understands and promotes fair use practices with staff and students.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to demonstrate competence in the ten teacher standards. Ability to facilitate the development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared by the school community. Ability to manage by advocating, nurturing and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Ability to collaborate with families and community members responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizes community resources. Ability to act with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner. Ability to understand, respond to and interact with the larger political, social, economic, legal and cultural context that affects schooling.
