Position Summary:
The Media Specialist will provide students and faculty with resources to supplement curriculum, whether in-house collection and/or resources or through the use of technology. Responsible for supervising and maintaining all media resources, including the use and checking out of these resources, and the Library Media Center (LMC) and all Library Media Program (LMP)activities. This person will also develop, implement, and interpret an effective LMP which strives to achieve the mission of Responsive Education Solutions (ResponsiveEd).
Qualifications:
Education/Certification § Bachelor's degree and valid State of Arkansas teaching certificate. § State certification as a school LMS. Master's Degree in Educational Technology, Master of Library Science, or comparable degree, preferred. Experience § Previous experience working in a Public or Charter School. Required KSAs § Must have advanced knowledge of State of Arkansas LMP requirements. § Must be able to meet assigned building and district responsibilities. § Must be able to complete building goals and district exit outcomes. § Must be able to allocate and manage expenditures of assigned budget funds on the basis of curricular and replacement needs. § Must be able to develop and promote the LMP, its routines, usage scheduling, and procedures. § Must be able to develop a collection and/or resources that support the curriculum. § Must be able to organize and supervise the ordering, checking, processing, and maintaining of LMC materials. § Must be able to negotiate and manage vendors. § Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. § Must be able to communicate with students, teachers, and staff members. § Must be able to manage multiple priorities effectively. § Must be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships. § Must be able to travel as necessary. Preferred KSAs § 3-5 years of experience maintaining and supporting LMP and LMC in a Public or Charter School. § 3-5 years of experience maintaining and supporting a heavy technology based LMP and LMC. § 3-5 year of experience as LMS for a Public or Charter School.
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Assist staff and students with LMC technology.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of software and CDROMs in the LMC.
  • Provide basic instruction to staff or students for equipment use and LMP.
  • Assist staff with computer and/or Audio Visual (AV) equipment problems.
  • Help staff and students become comfortable with technology by being available to assist them.
  • Establish and maintain behavioral standards for students in the LMP.
  • Assist students in becoming effective and efficient users of LMC resources.
  • Help students develop habits and behaviors of independent reference work and skills in the use of reference material in relation to planned assignments.
  • Organize LMP, equipment, and LMC for effective and efficient utilization and circulation.
  • Keep the collection and/or resources current within the constraints of the annual budget by purchasing quality print and computer-based materials.
  • Establish and maintain an attractive and easily accessible LMC that is conducive for learning.
  • Maintain the library catalog.
  • Effectively utilize clerical, volunteer, student and/or other personnel to provide quality library service to users.
  • Maintain appropriate records of library materials.
  • Maintain an ease-of-use process for materials and resources.
  • Advance knowledge of current LMC books and authors in the collection and/or resources and assist students with selecting materials.
  • Have an active awareness of the curriculum and support it through collection and/or resources development.
  • Provide leadership in all aspects of the LMP.
  • Develop a research and library skills program relating to the needs of the students.
  • Guide students in finding and using a wide variety of materials.
  • Instill in students the ability to become self-learners by promoting the spirit of inquiry and teaching effective fact-finding skills.
  • Plan with teachers, when appropriate, for meaningful and effective grade appropriate reference work and/or literature appreciation activities for their students.
  • Actively plan with teachers and groups of teachers to integrate LMP and multimedia materials within the instructional program.
  • Evaluate and select materials needed to meet both the curricular and individual needs of students, teachers, and administrators who will be using the LMC.
  • Determine the needs of teachers and students as a basis for the selection of new materials and equipment.
  • Conduct periodic inventory of library collection and/or resources, as well as library AV equipment and library computers.
  • Supervise the withdrawal of outdated and damaged materials.
  • Demonstrate positive techniques to promote students' self-image.
  • Interact positively with students, teachers, and staff members.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to change.
  • Manage conflict and frustration constructively.
  • Coordinate and partner with other school libraries as well as with public libraries to maximize the effectiveness of the LMP.
  • Help staff make full use of the services and resources of the LMC.
  • Serve on library curriculum committee and district wide technology committee.
  • Perform special projects, during and after normal business hours, and other duties as assigned.
Travel as required.
